League Wars!
I’ve heard about them, watched them, rooted for my favorite team, and now, I was going to take part in them…
If I could get my parents to sign a waiver.
“Come on,” I plead with them. “I’ve been doing great with my power training sessions with BADGE. It’s not like I’m going to be fighting against the WMD Black Order. I’m going to be in the bottom divisions with teams like the Wild Wave Surf Club and the NWO.”
“Who will you be fighting with?” My mother asked, her arms crossed and locked into her ‘Absolutely Not’ stance. “What league will you be joining for this?”
“I trained with Time’s Arrow for a little bit,” I said. “But I don’t know, they are a bit more powerful than I am. I’m looking at my options, but nobody is going to consider signing me if I don’t have your permission. PLEASE!!”
“I don’t know, sprout,” Dad said. “I’ve followed the rosters along with you. There are some pretty unsavory leagues forming out there. A few seasons ago, the Avengers and Area 51 teamed up, but now there is a new group splitting away from them. Villains Inc. I just can’t keep track of them anymore.”
“Like I said, I won’t be fighting against any of them. The 5th Precinct can get all up in their grills. I just want to be a part of it now that I’m getting better. It’s part of my training as a hero to fight against the Legion should they every try and come back.”
Mom shook her head. “I think all you’re looking for is pain and suffering.”
“They will be there, yes,” I said. “But I don’t plan on looking for them.”
“That’s not what I meant. I think you are just going to get hurt.” She said as she turned to the kitchen sink and started slicing vegetables for our dinner salads. She held on up over her shoulder for me to see. “Hey, look. A purple onion. Do you want to join up with them and make me cry like this one is?”
“I don’t want to make you cry, Mom,” I said as I sat down at our small kitchen table. “The fights are done safely. There are medical personnel on the scene in case of accidents. Nobody is actually up there trying to kill anyone.”
“Is your friend from the Hero Olympiad, Angelus, going to be there?” Dad asked. “I think you said he was a member of the Scottish Claymores: MacGregors.”
“He will. And Ms. Fae will be there with the Legacy of Spawn. Astra will be there with the 5th Precinct: Space Force and Catalyst will be there with The Star Force.” I thought about the different people I had worked with so far on the BADGE Space Station.
“So, to protect your secret identity, your mother and I cannot go up there to keep an eye on you. If we do agree to let you go, who would you want to be your chaperone?”
At least Dad seemed to be on my side. I sometimes think he is actually a bit jealous he didn’t develop any super-powers, unless being a Super Dad counted. He and I watched matches together on YouTube, commenting on good uses of powers and fighting ability. “I can ask Futurina, she will likely be up there watching over her adopted daughter Astra. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind.”
“You’re sure, are you,” Mom said. “I think she will have enough on her plate taking care of one foolish girl.”
“Honey, you and I both played sports while we were in school. It isn’t fair to deny our daughter the opportunity to do something she wants to because we can’t. This will help her learn about being a part of a team. Cooperation.” Dad stood up and walked over to Mom at the sink. He placed his hand gently on her shoulder. “We can at least talk to this Futurina woman and see what she says.”
I bit my tongue, restraining myself from correcting him by saying Futurina was an elf. Baby steps. Baby steps.
Mom hung her head down in resignation. “We can call her and invite her over for coffee and talk it over.”
Clasping my hands together, I cheered as much as I could inside my head without speaking or moving. League Wars 9, here comes Madam Marvelous.
