I found myself aboard the BADGE Orbital Arena for the first time. There were similarities is the construction to the BADGE Orbital Space Station, but it truly was a very different entity. The large flooded main chamber made my neighbors infinity pond look like one of those little blue kiddie pools you could buy for a dollar at Buxsmart. Tall support structure holding the clear ceiling in place only added to the sense of stellar miraculous-ness of knowing that the entire structure floated weightlessly in the void of space.
I arrived with Angelus, who had agreed to be my guardian for League Wars. “Kitt’n, they sight of all these stars is a true wonder, but I think I can still prefer watching them while camping in the desert. They seem so cold and lifeless here.”
“I think it’s beautiful,” I said. “But if it makes you feel better, I can change into a coyote and howl at the moon for you to remind you of being home.”
“That’s right kind of you,” Angelus said as he tipped his hat to me. “I believe your new league will be waiting for you in your locker rooms. Good luck, Kitt’n.”
“You too.”
I was so excited I had to visit the girl’s restroom before I made it to the Lothlorien locker room My leaguemates were already in the room. Loki studied over papers at a table with Pops while the non-ghost members milled about with one another. Layak didn’t say much. He seemed to dote on the ghost of Queen Satreyia, same as Saryn did on the ghost of her husband, Bogair Hatefang. Greyson, Amren, and Norbu did the actual sparring as Nukleas watched.
“Hi all,” I said. I sported my Madam Marvelous form, dressed to look like my heroic ideal.
“Glad you could make it.” Loki said as he waved at the wall on the opposite side of the room. His attention appeared to be fully engrossed in the papers he and Pops glared at. “The first round is against Soldiers of Fortune.”
“Ewww,” I said. “I’ve seen them nearly every time I join a KOTM battle. They are that group that gets to the event early and just stands in line so nobody else can get in. They rarely fight, they’re just tough enough they hold their spots and collect the prizes at the end.”
“Yep,” Pops said. “We’ve all run into them. We’re sunk for the first round, unless you want to give it a go?”
“Me? Alone?”
I couldn’t believe how they all seemed to think I would be able to defeat a whole league all by myself.
“Are you all hazing me, as the new girl?”
“Nope,” Loki said. “There’s no point to go in and let them have defensive wins when we know we don’t stand a chance against them. We’ve trained against you these past few days. Your abilities may be enough to take them by surprise and earn us some points.”
“Are you sure you are not hazing me? You don’t come to league wars and plan on not fighting. Do you?” I asked.
Pops waved his cane at me. “We ain’t cowards, you young whipper-snapper! We just know a losing battle when we see one.”
I shrugged. From the point of the league war rules, I understood their reasoning. Challenging an opponent and losing counted as a win for the opposing team. If my team needed me to try to do it solo against the wall that was Soldiers of Fortune, I guess that was what I was going to do.
Challenging one of the lower rated members of their squad, I fought ? ᥇ꪶꪮꪮᦔ ꪖᦓᦓꪖᦓᦓ꠸ꪀ ? first. He beat me down easily. I then challenged Demonica and lost as well.
I realized something that I never considered before: League Wars was hard.
I couldn’t go without giving it a third try. Lucky number three. I’d fought and won against some of their members in the KOTM, so I couldn’t be completely inept for the crowd on my first round.
Not being in the larger leagues, not many people were watching us. Most people seemed to write the lower leagues off, thinking they aren’t as interesting or we don’t work as hard as everyone else. I needed to prove that kind of thinking wrong.
Madam Marvelous doesn’t quit. When people say that something is impossible, my response is, “Nuh-huh. I am possible. Get out of my way.”
I challenged Dark Ghost. We fought and I WON!! I challenged Electricat and beat her too!
I’d like to say my team was behind me cheering, but they were all busy doing their own things.
Talking. Sparring. Dealing with their ghosts. I felt disheartened. Maybe the lower ranks aren’t enough to get excited over. I headed back to the locker room and gave myself some time to think. With two more rounds coming up in the next few days, I might as well save my energy.
Soldiers of Fortune summoned others from Lothlorien to battles and trounced us, but we weren’t undefeated at least. I did manage to earn us three wins. At the close of the round, we all headed off to rest.
I was surprised to find a message from Chameleon of the Soldiers of Fortune in my mailbox as I walked through the busy corridors around the people milling around the Division 9 battles. I guess someone went into overtime.
League?
Strong toon. nice! Would you be interested in joining our league for the next League Wars? If you are planning on leveling slowly, we'd like to have you aboard.
Well, at least somebody noticed my efforts. I smiled and skipped back to my quarters. .
