“Well, this has been… what’s the right word for it… embarrassing.” Silver Paladin said.
He and several members of the Star Force sat in the stands
watching the last few rounds of Frosty League Wars wrap up. The holographic
displays showed the standings in all the different divisions. WMD in the first
box.
Avengers 51 in almost every other division box. Every
division they competed in.
Chained Angel sat beside him. “At least we did as well as we
did last league war. We didn’t do worse. That would have been embarrassing.”
“I’m not talking about just us. I’m speaking in general.
Look at that. Five of the seven leagues all being led by one organization.”
Silver Paladin said. “Why not take them all?”
Catalyst shrugged. “They’ve taken Division One before. If
they wanted, they could have done it again. Maybe next league war they will.”
“I wouldn’t doubt it.” Chained Angel nodded. “League Wars
are a game within a game. It takes a lot of organization to pull that off.
Planning. Communication. Sacrifice. They did it right. Others have tried to do
it, but not succeeded like Avengers 51.”
“True,” Silver Paladin said. “How many entries does that one
group have?”
“I think they have ten or so. Bless their hearts,” Chained
Angel shook her head. “Two of their teams are fighting one another again this
round.”
“I hope most of them like their participation awards. It’s
all good practice for when they are really needed out there, like with Lady
Phoenix.” Catalyst said.
“There are leagues that didn’t get that chance. Did you see
that group protesting in New Amsterdam? L.U.S.H.? They were in front of the
former B.A.D.G.E. headquarters with picket signs.” Silver Paladin said.
“The so-called Legion of Unusual Superheroes? Yeah. They
said they sent in the paperwork and everything, but never heard back on it.”
“There were fewer divisions this League War, weren’t there.
I think Haunted Heroes had eight, didn’t it?”
“Yes. There were quite a few missing heroes this time around
and some, like Starmaster had to find different opportunities to fight.”
Chained Angel said.
“Based on the math, more than a few leagues grew in size
this time compared to last.” Catalyst chuckled. “Bigger isn’t always better.”
“As always, it is a matter of quality over quantity.”
Chained Angel said. “I do wish there was a way to promote a league staying together
for multiple league wars. I feel sometimes that it has become to much like a
for-profit sport. I guess for some it is.”
“So, what are we going to do after the awards ceremony?” Silver
Paladin asked.
“I have an idea,” Catalyst sat up in his seat, enthused
about whatever he was about to speak about. “I’ve been working on something new.
With Infinite Tempest’s help.”
“Really,” Chained Angel said. “What is it?”
“I call it the Galaxy Jumper. We can use it to travel to
different worlds.”
“So, what are you proposing. We head off planet and go on an
intergalactic vacation?” Chained Angel said, her eyes twinkling with the
thought.
“Yes,” Catalyst said. “We deserve a real break. Frostuary
was fun-ish, but there was a lot of work to it. Collecting ice crystals, hunting
for chocolate, constant snowball fighting. Let’s find a nice, quiet beach somewhere.”
“Sounds out-of-this-world, Catalyst,” Chained Angel said as she stood up from her seat. “Let’s go find Risa.”
