Three Days Left to Add Color

By Chaz Hamilton

At the start of the month, Dan Peyton announced a contest. Coloring is Key

He has run this style of contest several times.

There are three day's left to participate in the current contest. That means there is still plenty of opportunity to earn up to three Power Cards worth up to thirty Morphons.

A few weeks ago, Dan showed us what he could do with a print-off of one of his own drawings using colored pencils.

Several other players have already contributed to this contest while having some fun coloring.

The rules have even reverted to the previous art contest staples. Take one of his images and do with it what you will.

Last time, I pushed myself to try and combine some of his drawings into one scene. My theme for this one was inspired by Kirk and Spock. I tried to do something complex, but that doesn't mean you have to.

I would hate to see anyone miss out on gaining some free rewards, earned by having a bit of creative fun.

I never had used the Paint 3D program much before Dan Peyton started his coloring contests here. The first one I participated in was the one where we colored eggs. Being I was making an submission for Heroes Rising, I got the idea to take Vincent Price's head from him in his role in Batman as Egghead. Was it a work of art? Heck no, but I had fun doing it.

With this contest, I took the time to try and shape up a new hero I've been working on, Silver Paladin. I was very pleased in the end with my efforts. (I do think that the helmet sort of looks like a metallic beagle with droopy ears, but that makes him less threatening to kids, right???)

I believe I can see an improvement in my work with each attempt at coloring his drawings. Could the same happen for you? Give it a try and find out.

Please, take a few minutes and join in with the other players who have participated. The more the merrier. Use his art to re-create your hero in game. A trial run for the costume contest, perhaps. Tap into your creative side and you might be pleased with what you come up with. Do the coloring with a fall theme. It doesn't matter what your inspiration might be, but use it to express yourself.

Have some fun. Free players, cash in. Everyone else, show us what you've got. Thirty Morphons is still enough to level up most power cards. There is value to your efforts beyond having a pretty picture to share with the rest of the player community.

Perhaps it will help prepare you for the next time they do a contest with having winning player submitted art on a card.

Hero Highlights- ♦️Gatekeeper Arosha~NG♦️

Our subject this week is an ex-patriot from dimension SHC and has many useful ideas about Dimension HR.

Can you tell us your name, or would you prefer your Hero design
tion/code name?
~~My name is ♦️Gatekeeper Arosha~NG♦️.

Are you working thru B.A.D.G.E. or are you independent?
~~I've been working thru B.A.D.G.E., but I am still somewhat independent.

Are you currently in a League, and if so, would you care to tell us about it?
~~Starting just before LW 4, I fought in Glow Worms, then left after the war and joined ♦️Avengers: Blood Riders♦️ , and here I stand with people from all over... laughing, and pushing each other to become better.

Can you tell us a little about your powers? Are all of your powers Morphon based?
~~My original powers come from Magic. They were augmented further by Morphons, of course.

Do you have a sidekick?
~~My sidekick at the time depends on my form, which is a bit fluid. It’s either a purple Shadow or a parrot on my shoulder.

Could you tell us a little about your origin?
~~NobleGates was my brother and my creation was Arosha SHC, we each fought our best but loved duels the most. Gatekeeper Arosha is a play on both of our toons (from SHC) NobleGates Gatekeeper and Arosha SHC.

What is your favorite piece of gear? Why?
~~My Rune Covered Boots, cuz it reminds me of an old game I used to play and the stats on it are stellar for beating the other combat-monsters in the game.

Do you Have any advice for new Heroes?
~~The game can be played at any pace you choose... if you want to be a monster participate in team buys to get better Morphon points for your budget.
~~also, Play smart, don't go for King of the Hill till you’re ready, join events, get into the top 15, grow over time... in club fights you can get MPs for joining and by winning fights.
~~If you want to be more social, do the interview with Krystal Fae for more MPs in cards.
~~ Buy all of the cores you will need them to be able to compete with the best if that's your plan.

Is there anything else you'd care to add?
~~Yes... find friends and make sure to keep your teammates up to match your level so you can use all of your cards. I see people still who don't have enough friends to fill one for each level.

Those are excellent points to remember for our newer players... Thank you for your insightful remarks.

Till next time, my friends.

The Month of October is about to "Fall" on Heroes Rising

by Chaz Hamilton

Hello, Sentinel Readers. We've seen some excitement in September, haven't we? The Ruby Shard Hunt, or as I called it, the Quest in the Midwest. Results from the art contest with three most excellent limited-run Power Cards under the Powers tab. Anyone who is working to collect a full set of cards that the game has put out better snap them up, because I guarantee they will not last.

This upcoming month will prove to be very eventful. Listening in on Dan Peyton's bi-weekly chats, he has revealed, without spoilers, that October will be a very busy month. So busy that there are events that he would like to put out for the players but doesn't feel that there is time to do them justice. What could possibly be around the corner?

Since Heroes Rising has hit their one year anniversary, we can look at last October for some clues.

#1: We have already hear rumblings as to the Heroes Rising "Dress up like your character" costume contest, and its companion, the "Gender-Bender"(or whatever else Trace Evans wants to call it). One thing that new players, or some old players may not be doing is looking back on old Sentinel posts on the These City Streets blog. I'm not going to hazard a guess at what the prize would be for this contest, but if you go back and look at past posts from last year, I will tell you that the prize for the Halloween contest was, <ahem> GENEROUS!

#2: Last October, the inaugural Heroes Rising League Wars took place. It has been a while since our capes took to the orbiting space station for the Stellar Battle. Will there be a League War 5 in our future? My only thought is that October is a good month for sequels. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street... Will we have League War 5: Space Zombies?
If that is the case, I highly recommend you start building up your leagues now rather than later.

#3: One thing we can count on is Dan Peyton's new arc for his lore stories. He has hinted that they may begin again mid-October, and they will tie in with game-time events. Can he resist putting a frightening spin on Krampus's plans. I mean, to be honest, doesn't Krampus look like he would be far happier during Halloween than Christmas?
Strange Quark is acting oddly. Chase has been found, but she is aligned with the enemy. Krampus's mouth is watering at the idea of having gained a new BADGE operative under his control. And we still don't know what the Ruby Shards are all about. (I have a suspicion, but I can't wait to find out if I am right. How about all of you?) That leads me to the next event...

#4) ...A Raid! There has been a history of Dan's stories leading up to global level events. The Battle in Bursa vs the Jinn. The call to duty in North Onnotangu and the fight with Skelanimal. (I won't forget that Skelanimal actually did a fair bit of self-harm to himself in that raid, and did anyone else notice that he was helping collect Ruby Shards during the hunt? I think Director Nova must have had him on a tight leash to do that after his capture. Now, that should be a piece of fan art. Director Nova walking Skelanimal on a leash. [Please, someone else laugh with me at that image])
If a raid is approaching, new players, here is some advice. Build up your attack power to get in as much damage as you can. There is a lot of focus on movement for League Wars and Fight Clubs, but in the past, Raids have been all about damage, and the more you do, the better the rewards you will earn.

#5) ???
The developers may have a nice Trick for us up their sleeves, or maybe even a Treat if we are good. As I mentioned earlier, look back at the past events last October. All of the upcoming events in October might prove to be an excellent source for submitting an article to the Sentinel. September saw the rates for articles improve, so it is a good source for gaining some Morphons. Not that I am trying to put myself out of a job at the Sentinel, but I cannot cover every story. We want to hear from your POV on the world of Heroes Rising
(Of course, if you would be interested in doing an "In The Room" interview with me, send me a message. I've got a clear calendar at the moment.)

Happy October, everyone. Keep your eyes open and watch out for the next big things. Find some players to do a Halloween-themed Collaborative Story with or go shopping for your costume and WOW us with your re-creation of your character. Above all, continue to level, have fun, and grow our community.

Alternate Art Card: Undulations

We come to the final winner of the alternate art card. I want to say that the order in which I posted these has nothing to do with who was first or third, I didn't have that designation. Anyway, without further ado, I present the art of  Todd Goode.

I decided on the name, Undulations, merely because it describes the energetic motion of the image. Todd's use of color drew my eye, I liked how the image makes one feel like he is somehow flying, and yet a fish...man...thing. Of all the coloring pieces I went through, there were many who used this art to create their own interpretation, and gave me fits trying to figure which I felt worked best for a card. In the end, I simply liked the color scheme. Note, be mindful of the color balance with the background, so that it doesn't blend too heavily with the foreground.

My version of this card brings the figure down to the ocean floor. I was inspired by a request for more aqua themed power cards. Initially, I wanted it to appear that he was mid-transformation. However, the final result feels more like a mer-person. One artistic element on this piece that is a bit more heavily used is layered shadowing. This person has a LOT of tail that wraps around itself. To convey that, I had to make sure the shadows moved in such a way that it gave motion to the whole image.

Reward Cards... Sell or Keep?

By Chris Evans

If you are active in the games’ auxiliary activities such as the fiction forum and the occasional fiction contests, the art events, and the occasional other contests and events, you have probably at some point received cards as a reward or prize.

The question under consideration is whether you should keep said cards and use them in your arsenal, or should you sell them for their Morphon return value?

As with so many considerations that this game leads one to deal with, the answer is “It Depends...”

If you haven’t reached a point in your leveling/card activating by team-mates where all activation slots are full, it would probably be to your advantage to retain them for use as powers.
On the other hand, if your actual card count exceeds your activated cards by a fair margin, you might consider selling some of the excess ones for their Morphon return value. This is my own current situation.

Look also at the values of the cards. Does the Attack, Defense, and Movement gains you get from owning the card outweigh the value of the card you want to purchase. Most reward cards, like Reality Writer are very low value for their bonuses, but some cards, like Stop the Presses are fairly good cards numerically. I would also like to point out that reward cards are not meant to be leveled.

Whichever decision you make, there will be pros and cons to deal with, so do not act without careful consideration.

Are you below level 12? Want an advantage?

by Chaz Hamilton

I know many of the players here are established, long-term players, but there are always new players stopping by and giving Heroes Rising a try. If you are one of those new players, trying to work your way through your first dozen levels, let me share some advice with you.

Take a look at the New Player bundles offered in the game for players below level 12. There are two of them and together they cost $15 dollar (one for $5 and one for $10). These bundles offer Morphons, Power Cards, and one of them an item. Both bundles are a worthwhile investment into your characters future. And truth be told, game designers need to eat, too. These initial purchases are definitely a Win-Win for both parties.

When a new player starts out, timing plays a big key in your advancement. If you are lucky and begin when a "Hunt" event is taking place, you can get some nice Power Cards in advance of your level to gain them. At Level 9, during the Red Shard Hunt (or as a reporter, I labeled it The Quest in the Midwest), I know of a hero that earned 34 Power Cards (mostly Crystal-based, but some Morphon-based. The advantage of these types of cards is that they do not have upkeep costs.

"Hunts" occur periodically, so don't fret if you didn't join at just that perfect moment. Another one is always around the corner.

These New Player bundles offer a variety of Morphon-based cards and Morphons that can be used to purchase you choice of items (either Gear or Power Cards). One bundle includes a Ring of Life that will nearly double your Health as soon as you put it on.

When it comes to your initial Morphon purchases, let me advise you that better Gear is always a good choice in the long run. You can obtain decent Gear by defeating Bosses in Missions or through Crystal-based purchases in the Armory. The right Gear purchased with Morphons will compliment your character's arsenal. Do some shopping and see what combinations tickle your fancy.

There are many players who play-for-free or limited purchases. These are both viable options. Put the work in and reap the rewards. I only suggest looking into these New Player bundles as a cost-effective method to jump-start your heroes career.

These New Players bundles will disappear on September 28th. The will likely return, but like any good deal, who knows how soon that will be. You can find them on your Powers tab, but only if you are Level 12 or lower and have not already purchased them.

Give it some thought.

Alternate Art Card: Asteroid Punch

We continue the alternate art cards with a wonderful submission by Victor Wanderley Correa.
I chose to title this one Asteroid Punch for obvious reasons. What struck me about this piece was the way the artist paid attention to detail. Often when designing a power, you think of the action of the power itself, what it is going to do. Here, the artist paid some attention to the source of the power. The hero in the art is drawing up rocks with one hand while the other is throwing a previously gathered batch of rocks which are turned into a flaming projectile, which I translated as an asteroid. For the figure, there is a nice use of color and design for the heroes outfit. Great work. If I were to offer a note, it would be to consider lighting. Bounce light and reflection are both important in a piece. The asteroid is a bright object, so some of the light should reflect off the heroes body.

My art for this goes back. I actually drew this image a long time ago, before I was working with Heroes Rising. This was an experiment in dynamic muscle. I stored the image away for a while and then pulled it out when I was inspired to turn it into a super power.

Alternate Art Card: Fire Shield

Back in July we held an art contest. This time it was actually a contest in which I selected three entrees to be used as alternate art cards in the game. It was no easy task. The art was great and selecting my favorite three proved almost impossible.

The first piece is from Mark Alan Bisanz, I gave it the title of Fire Shield. I liked the color balance on this one. I especially liked how he tied the background in with flames behind him. My only suggestion, never forget the shadows.

My painting using this sketch was completed a long time ago. In fact, this picture was originally done to represent the number 3 (the finished image faces the other direction). The idea was for it to be the third place prize for the inaugural League Wars. We decided go another direction for the prizes and I was left with this art sitting in the files. I changed the art a little and recreated the card about three months ago.

Helpful Hints for Upcoming Costume Contest

By Chaz Hamilton

There is already a nice buzz going around about the upcoming Halloween Cosplay Contest, where players are invited to re-create their Heroes Rising character. I'm excited to see what players come up with.

What surprises me is the number of players who seem apprehensive to participate. There is a level of needless concern over getting it right. I want to help alleviate those doubts and worries with some helpful hints and suggestions to help everyone succeed.

1) The Costume Contest will most likely be based on the character you have created for your avatar. Unless you plan on igniting yourself to reproduce a flaming aura or holding a plasma light in your hands to reproduce and arcing, electrical flare, those effects could prove difficult. Take a look at what is in the avatar creator and match it with what is available to you

Hint 1) I've seen some people talk about the difficulty of portraying a female character because of having facial hair. There is a full surgical face mask in the Avatar Creator that could be used to cover one's face and hide a beard.

Of course, this is a super-hero themed game and costume, you will need to include some of those elements if you want to do well. A chest emblem. A cape. Gloves. With Halloween being so close, these are all items that could easily be purchased or cobbled from ordinary daily items.

2) There are many videos out there on the internet about crafting a Cosplay costume. Take a look and search for ideas. One thing to remember is that superhero costumes come in many shapes and sizes. Does the Punisher have a complicated costume? How about Namor? The modern Superboy or any number of characters from current television or movie programs. Yes, there are complicated costumes out there, but there are some very simple ones as well.

Hint 2) The true secret to creating any believable character is crafting the correct ATTITUDE!! The proper mindset and pose. A good gimmick doesn't hurt either. Something that is evocative of who and what your character is. While there aren't many objects in the game yet, a magical character holding a crystal ball or a brawler like Chase carrying a pair of knives (or shuriken, if she remembers getting them) would be perfectly appropriate.

The truth is the challenge here is to have fun, not be perfectly accurate. In fact, accuracy in comic books themselves is completely dependent on the artist. You will rarely find two individuals who create a character the exact same way. Look at the various incarnations of Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman, etc...

Find the interpretation that works best for you.

3) If nothing else inspires you, remember the old anagram; K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid). Overcomplicating your project can either make your task overwhelming or overly-complex. Do you need to create a set of lily-white wings by tearing apart a pillow or plucking hundreds of chickens to get their feathers? A black marker and some white paper can create the same effect.

Hint 3) What is the foundation for the images in the avatar maker? A human form in its underwear. I can guarantee that most people have what they need to create that costume right now. The only question is how far are you willing to strip it down to get some extra Morphons?

I look forward to seeing what people come up with, in the base challenge and in Trace's bonus cross-gender contest. Look at it this way. Think about the smile you will put on other people's faces when they see your efforts. I think there are several players who could use a good reason to chuckle, grin, or fall on the floor laughing as they appreciate your efforts.

Participation Rewards: What's in it for you?

By Chaz Hamilton

If you have visited the Heroes Rising Players page, you likely have seen posts about Dan Peyton's contests. Sometimes it has been an art contest, sometimes a fiction writing contest. On his latest Facebook post, he spoke about an upcoming Halloween 'Dress as your Character' Costume Contest.

Here is a link to the current art contest project, which has been updated. Coloring is Key

I highly recommend taking part in these optional, out-of-game projects. I enjoy them because I am a creative person. That's part of the reason why I am a reporter with the Sentinel.

I know not everyone shares that creative drive, or some may feel that the rewards don't equal the effort. My question for those people is simple. Have you tried?

For instance, with the current art contest, the rewards are up to three Good Job power cards at a value of 10 Morphons each. Color three of his images and you will receive enough Morphons to improve the level of most Power Cards one step. Those are Morphons you don't need to level to earn or purchase. Seems like a win to me.

Dan Peyton has commented on his bi-weekly story-chats (a informative hour-long live event where he discusses with viewers about his projects and reads a selected chapter from his bodies of work) that he enjoys seeing the different takes and styles of the contributive pieces. I've participated in three of these events and have enjoyed doing the work, but also seeing what other people come up with. Some of the works have even appeared in game, such as the eggs received in the Hunt and Raid events.

(FYI- If you watch Dan Peyton's live Facebook events, sometimes he passes on advanced information about the Heroes Rising game. Who doesn't like insider information? For those who want to be 'in-the-know', I recommend listening in.)

The other reward for participation is personal experience. They are an opportunity to expand your skill sets. A reason to learn how to better use and art design program. A chance to tell a story about your character that nobody else knows. If taken seriously, you can even discover something new about yourself. You might be better at the activity than you thought before you tried.

Recently, several people have posted covers for their character's comic-book. Many of them are exceptional. You could use the pictures as a means to do the same for your character. Go beyond the images available in the Avatar Generator and expand the possibilities.

The images can even be printed off and colored, not only colored by digital means. I plan on doing one by hand myself, seeing as there is a new hero I have a strange connection with. (Fiction Forum story available if you want the details.)

I have a general idea of the number of people who participate in the raids and hunt events. It would be great if as many people participated in these challenges as did in the in-game events. Please give it some thought.

Powers Contest: Crossroads: A New Hero Rising

Last but most certainly not least, the winner of the Powers Fiction Contest: Crossroads! Well done, and kudos to all participants. We eagerly look forward to your entries for the next contest.

*****

“Listen, Allyson.  These dimension powers we have are pretty incredible, but they aren’t all that we are,” Alternate Allyson was saying. “We each have a different set of skills and powers that aren’t based on dimensional energies, and we need to develop them, too.”

“I know, I know!  But it is so cool to be able to travel wherever I want, whenever I want!” exclaimed Allyson, still giddy from the experiences of yesterday.  Learning she could harness the energies between dimensions, dimension-skipping to Ireland, meeting heroes she’s only seen on TV and an actual Leprechaun!  Even getting blown into the water when the crock of gold exploded was an amazing experience!

“Yes, that is fun.  And very handy,” agreed Alternate-Allyson. “And you’ll get to do that a lot. Like today.  You’re due at BADGE HQ in an hour to get equipped and trained in your powers, so just calm down and get ready.”

Allyson and Alternate-Allyson were currently floating in grey-space, a sort of interdimensional conference room that Allyson could generate to host other dimensional versions of herself and hold discussions or meetings. Alternate Allyson, the first alternate Allyson that spoke to her, was the only version she was currently familiar enough with to host in her grey-space.

It was funny, but calling her Allyson wasn’t confusing at all, and meeting a few of the others through Alt-Allyson was fascinating.  They were all called Allyson, or Ally, or Alex, or Allen...yes, there were male version of her out there, too.  But no matter what they were called, their names carried all the information about which dimension they belong to, so there was never any confusion.  It probably had to do with the fact that since their communication was all mental, their sense of self was easily conveyed.

“Okay, let me get cleaned up and I’ll skip on over there....”

________________________________________

Appearing outside the main entrance to BADGE HQ in New Amsterdam, Allyson looked up at the imposing glass and steel structure.

“Okay, here we go....”

Pushing open the doors, she approached the reception desk, smiling at the young man behind the desk.

“Hi! I’m supposed to report for evaluation and training today,” she said nervously to Chet, according to his name tag.

Chet smiled and said, “Of course, please fill out these forms and bring them back to me and someone will be with you shortly.” He handed her a cracked and beaten clipboard with a daunting number of forms, all in fine print.  And a pen, of course.  A very plain, very ordinary, and very cheap black pen.

Chet saw her look at the pen and clipboard and then look at the surrounding lobby.  The lobby was very modern with glass front, shiny steel girders, impressive sculptures, and high definition monitors everywhere. He knew what she was thinking and took some pity on the newbie.

“When we first opened and started working with heroes, we used computer tablets to do all our in-processing.  However, the tablets kept getting broken by new heroes who didn’t know their own strength or melted because they couldn’t control their powers. Our administration budget just couldn’t handle the cost. So we went old school.  They only thing that happens now is that people keep taking the pens.”

“Oh. Umm...thanks!” Allyson replied, embarrassed. She quietly went and sat in one of the lobby chairs to fill out her paperwork.

________________________________________

Dressed in an uncomfortably tight-fitting spandex suit festooned with sensors from head to toe, Allyson waited patiently for someone to tell her what to do.  She was standing in the Evaluation room, where BADGE scientists analyze your powers so that BADGE has accurate knowledge about what you can and can’t do. It also allows them to design equipment and training regimens to help control and increase your powers.  Or suppress the powers, if deemed necessary.

The Evaluation room was a large black walled room with various items scattered throughout.  In the corner was a bench press machine used to measure strength.  Next to that was a treadmill used to measure a hero’s foot speed.  There was an area filled with objects of different shapes and sizes, from golf balls to 6’x6’ cubes.  The equipment in this room could detect and evaluate a variety of different powers.

“OK, Crossroads, we’ve evaluated your dimensional powers,” said a voice from the speakers. Dr. Valers was the scientist in charge of her evaluation today and was observing everything from the control booth. “With training you’ll be able to do more than just travel by intra-dimensional transference, or ‘dimensional-skipping,’ as you call it. We will be happy to help you hone your abilities.  From what we have recorded, you should be able to harness the interdimensional energies to perform a variety of tasks.”

“However, our sensors indicate that you have several powers that have become active through morphon exposure.  We’ll want to get those evaluated, also, so you know how to use them and what to expect.  This will also help you to identify other powers you may develop. Let’s begin.”

A pedestal with a glass orb rose out of the floor about 15 feet in front of her. “Please stay where you are.  this is a target that will read and analyze the energies you will be directing at at.”

“Energies...?”

“Yes.  Now close your eyes and picture the dimensional barrier you described to us. Can you see it?”

Allyson nodded and said, “Yes.”

“Good, now this maybe a little tricky, but if you can block out the visual input dimensional wall, you should be able to see other energies in that space.  The sheer power of the dimensional energy blots out other energies so you can’t see them.”

Furrowing her brow, Allyson struggled to turn off image of the dimensional wall, but not the space where she sees it. Finally, after what seemed like hours, she was able to imagine the wall had a dimmer switch and was able to reduce the intensity of the wall.  She began to see and sense other energies surrounding her in that space. She reached out to touch those energies and it felt different than the wild, chaotic energies of the barrier. It was strangely comforting feeling.

“Good, Crossroads,“ said Dr. Valers. Allyson opened her eyes and could see her reflected image in the wall in front of her. She was surrounded by a swirling, purple aura which didn’t even startle her. It felt right.

“Now focus all that energy into your hand and throw it at the orb.”

Allyson did as she was instructed, finding it easier than she thought. Her hand was enveloped in a bright purple glow and she thrust it towards the orb, awkwardly.  Purple energy streamed from her hand, striking the base of the pedestal at the floor and fizzling out.

“Again, Crossroads,” Dr. Valers urged.

After what seemed like an eternity, Allyson was able to access this energy and accurately hit, not only the sensor, but a variety of targets both stationary and moving.  Analysis indicated that the energy was classified as “mystical” energy, named that because they really don’t know where this energy comes from, but so called “magic users” like Krystal Fae or Aida have said they use the same energy to perform a variety of spells.  Crossroads ability to use this energy did not mean she was a magic user, only that she can access whatever energies exist in the space between dimensions.

By this time, Allyson was drenched in sweat and felt absolutely drained.  She wanted nothing more than to take a nap.

“Very good. With a little more practice it will be automatic. Let’s move on, “said Allyson’s personal taskmaster.

Allyson took a deep breath, hid her groan of frustration, and nodded briskly, as if she was eager to do more.

“Now we’ll test your defenses.  The might of your mystic attack will mean nothing if you can’t take a hit. Glass cannons don’t last very long,” Dr. Valers stated.  You have the ability to see the spaces between dimensions, which should mean that you can see into other dimensions. With the ability to see into higher dimensions, you can anticipate what your opponent will do before they do it by seeing its effect in those dimensions and reacting accordingly.”

What followed was a grueling session of meditation to be able to train her to see these higher dimensions, followed by learning to recognize what actions in our dimension had an effect in those dimensions and how to react to it. The meditation wasn’t bad, but seeing what actions had an effect in the higher dimensions entailed Allyson being attacked by robots, energy weapons, baseballs, etc. Learning to dodge those attacks was easy after the first hundred or so hits.

Allyson dragged herself to her feet using the chair next to her.  It looked like a rickety old chair, but it sure felt sturdy when it hit her.  Wiping the sweat from her face with the provided towel, she looked around at the room.  It was now littered with balls, bats, knives, throwing stars, tables, chairs, car parts... scorch marks were everywhere from the energy blasts. Everything she saw was the result of what they had thrown at her to teach her to utilize what she saw in the higher dimensions and translate it into defensive actions. They called it her Nth Dimensional Senses and would be critical to her survival.

“Dr. Valers?  Is it time for lunch, yet?” Allyson asked exhaustedly, ready for a break.

“Lunch?  It’s past dinner time, Crossroads.  Didn’t they tell you this would be an all-day event with no breaks?  We need to not only measure your power levels, but your stamina and power levels over time.”

“Oh.  No they didn’t,” Allyson ground out in frustration.

“I do apologize.  I assume with the entire hullabaloo over what happened in Ireland, they simply forgot to mention it,” Dr. Valers said in a placating tone.

“Oh, believe me, I understand.  But perhaps, since this is a standard event for new heroes, you could, perhaps, put that in the written material you hand out to those invited to be evaluated?” Allyson said heatedly.

“Yes, outstanding idea!  We’ll do that!” said Dr. Valers enthusiastically. “Now, for the final set of tests.  We’ll be testing your movement abilities. Aside from your intra-dimensional transfer ability, of course.”

“Oh, of course,” Allyson sarcastically replied, which the good doctor completely missed.

“Our data on you indicates that you should be able to fly, or at least levitate or hover in mid-air, “ said Dr. Valers.

“Excuse me?  How does your data tell you something I have never done? I mean, the Nth Dimensioal Senses are extrapolation of my dimensional powers and the Mystic Might is just me accessing other energies that exist in the interdimensional spaces, but flying?  Am I growing wings or something?” Allyson tried to look behind her at her back.

“No, of course you’re not growing wings,” Dr. Vlaers scoffed.  Then he paused looking at the data readouts. “At least, not yet....”

“What?!” exclaimed Allyson

“No, what I mean is that your energy emittance profile seems to include some sort of anti-graviton particle emission, you should be able to harness that to levitate, as if you were as light as air,” said Dr. Valers.  With training you may be able to actually fly through the air at high speeds, but that depends on how much of the particles you end up being able to output.”

Allyson stood still for a moment and closed her eyes.  Utilizing the meditation and concentration techniques they already taught her to harness her Nth Dimensional Senses, she began to concentrate on rising into the air.  She blocked out everything.  The sounds of the equipment in the room, Dr. Valer’s voice droning on, the sound of the ventilation system – they all fell away and disappeared from her thoughts.  All that Allyson thought about was being as light as air, of floating and reaching the ceiling.

Feeling no change after several minutes of concentration that left her sweating, she opened her eyes and looked at Dr. Valer’s in the control booth. “What am I doing wrong?  How do I access these graviton particles?”

Dr. Valer smiled and looked directly at Allyson, “They are called ‘anti-graviton’ particles and you access exactly like you are right now.”

Allyson blinked in confusion at Dr. Valer’s words. “What do you mean?  I haven’t done anything yet! I’m still stuck on the ground like my feet are nailed here.” As she said this, Allyson looked at her feet.  That’s when she realized she wasn’t on the ground anymore.  She was actually about 40 feet in the air, directly across to the control booth within touching distance of the ceiling.

She inhaled sharply and wobbled a bit, but stabilized quickly. Trying to move, Allyson turned awkwardly in the air, unsure of how to maneuver, but getting better by the minute.  She wasn’t able to fly, yet.  It was more like swimming than flying, and swimming badly at that.  But it was something she never imagined before and it was exhilarating!

Practicing levitating, landing, and moving in air for the next hour, Allyson didn’t realize how late it was until Dr. Valer finally broke through to her.

“You have made excellent progress for your first day, Crossroads.  How about I treat you to a late dinner in the HQ Commissary?”

Dropping to the floor, Allyson realized she was exhausted, and completely ravenous. “Oh, yes! That would be great, I’m starving!”

“Of course you are!  Expending the amount of energy in learning and controlling your powers you did burned an incredible amount of calories.  You can do something like that and not be hungry.  Although sometimes you won’t feel hungry after exertion like that, you need to force yourself to eat before your body starts to consume itself to feed your powers.   Why don’t you head towards the locker rooms and get changed and we’ll meet up in my office just down the hall?”

“Thank you, Doctor!  I’ll see you in a few minutes!”  Allyson exited the Evaluation Room feeling like she might just be able to be a hero and help someone.

Powers Contest: Chained Angel: After Hours

The runner up of the Powers Fiction Contest is... Chained Angel! Congratulations!

*****

Attack: Titanic Fury

Defense: Seduction

Movement: Falcon Swoop

“See you all tomorrow,” Becky waved at her crew as they wormed past her to get to their vehicles. “Drive home safely.”

“Night, Becks,” one of the servers replied as she got into a co-worker’s car. The engine started and the car sped off through the parking lot, pausing just long enough in the driveway to be passably considered a full-stop.

Becky nodded as the other cars followed suit, despite the company policy that stated everyone should wait until she made it to her vehicle before they departed. For the most part, they were good kids and she couldn’t blame them for not wanting to wait any longer than needed to depart. They had exciting lives to lead, friends to hang out with, or any number of other activities more appealing that closing a restaurant down for the night.

She missed those carefree days. As the door clicked close behind her, Becky waddled across the parking lot to her car parked next to the dumpster corral. The steady light of a streetlamp hanging above reflected off the hood of her car the same way it had for months, ever since she took the night manager position. She tucked the locked bag with the night’s bank deposit deeper into her apron pocket as she fumbled around for her keys.

A motion inside her belly brought her to a standstill as she reached the half-way point to her vehicle. “Calm down, baby. We’ll be home soon. Then we can both put our feet up.” She placed her hand on her stomach. “Doesn’t that sound good?”

Becky unlocked her car and squeezed into her seat behind the steering wheel. Engaging the car’s engine, a light flashed on her dashboard alerting her to low pressure in her back passenger-side tire. “What now?”

She wormed her way back out, untying her apron, with the deposit bag inside, and tossing it on the passenger side floorboards. She pressed the lock button on her key fob and moved to the other side of the vehicle to see what the problem was. As soon as she saw the slit in the rubber of the tire, she knew she wasn’t going home anytime soon. “What the hell? When did that happen?”

The car engine roared to life. Becky jostled the keys in her hand and pressed the off button on her remote. She backed away as she heard gears engaging and the car pulled forward. Stunned, she watched as it appeared for an instant that the gash in the back tire was closing up on its own.

The car rolled past the corner of the restaurant building and made its way to the exit onto the street. Becky shook her head and reached to grab her phone. A look of frustration and horror crossed her face as she realized her phone was in the apron along with the nightly deposit bag.

The late night was Chained Angel’s favorite time to fly. She glided on the air currents and marveled at the spectacular lights that created a tapestry entirely different that that of the daytime. The air was cooler, cleaner, and when clouds weren’t present, being aloft presented the illusion of her flying in space. Her companion inside her spoke of the times it flew as a legitimate Angel of Death beyond the Earth’s atmosphere, but her human body still needed air to breathe.

An alert came over her communicator, linked to a local police scanner app. “We have a report of a car stolen a few minutes ago. Near the N. A. Cho’s on one-hundred-and-fifty-first. The night manager reports that her vehicle drove off on its own accord in a northern direction. Be prepared for potential E.I. involvement.” The code for an enhanced individual. The rest of the report gave a description of the vehicle.

“I’m not far from there,” Angel responded on her wrist communicator. “BADGE agent 20570. I can give aerial support and reconnaissance.”

“Appreciated.” The dispatcher replied. “The victim is also requesting an emergency medical transport.”

As Chained Angel initiated a Falcon Swoop dive to gain a better vantage point over the streets, her wings shifted from white to deep black, angered by the latest request.  “How badly was she injured? Should I give her assistance first?”

“EMTs aren’t far from her position. She’s reporting unexpected contractions with her pregnancy but no physical assault during the vehicle’s theft.”

“Acknowledged,” Angel said. Violence against women struck a fierce chord within her, reminding Angel of her own crucible of a late night beating and being left to die. Whoever stole this woman’s car may not have harmed her, but the act might have endangered her unborn baby. Angel might not dish out a full course of her Titanic Fury, but a heaping-helping was definitely in order.

On the road ahead, Chained Angel spotted a vehicle pulling into an alley that fit the car’s description. She silently swept down to the roof of a building where she could watch and positioned her body in a manner she could do a rapid Falcon Swoop to engage the thief.

The car began to glow with a faint emission of yellow light. It pulled away into a human-shaped blob of energy and solidified. She recognized the woman who formed. Christine Kitt, or as she called herself, Ghost in the Machine.

A man stepped out from a doorway. “Did you get it?”

“Have I ever failed you?” Christine answered. She placed a hand on the car door and the lock audibly popped. Reaching down and pulling the handle open, Christine picked up the apron and pulled out the deposit bag. “Now for phase two.”

Angel dove down and landed on the roof of the car. “I don’t think so. Let’s call this phase one-and-a-half.”

“Damn it!” the man stepped further out from the shadows, revealing his identity. Leading Man, a long-standing criminal in the New Amsterdam area. “You led a god-damned cape here after you.”

“Please, don’t take his name in vain right in front of me,” Chained Angel jumped behind the trunk of the car, predicting Christine’s next move. “Don’t make me madder than I already am at you two.”

Christine touched the car and melded into it once again. As Angel expected, the engine roared to life again and began to back up.

Doubling in size multiple times, Chained Angel grew to match her Titanic Fury while grabbing the underside of the car. She picked it up and placed it roof down on the top of a two-story building. “You’re not going anywhere. Play turtle for a bit while I get your partner.”

“Darling, you don’t want to do that, do you? Not a ravishing creature like yourself.” Leading Man held his wrists out, feigning a desire to be handcuffed. “I’ll be your prisoner if you ask me to be, as you already own my heart. Do with my body what you will.”

Angel batted her eyes and smiled. A swelling attraction to Leading Man encroached into her chest. His perfectly styled soft brown hair. His shiny white teeth. Golden eyes that sparkled with warmth. A voice with a slight accent, dripping with honeyed words. His charm was irresistible. Even his worn leather jacket and subtly tight jeans that invited her eyes to explore topographically gave her pause.

She shrank down to normal size and moved up to him, clutching her hands together as she pressed them together close to her chest. She stopped inches away from him. “I…I…I’ve never met someone like you before.”

“Nor I, you darling.” He reached out to her with one hand. The golden twinkle in his eyes intensified. “Together we can be so happy. All you need to do is wait for me here for a few minutes. Then we can be together forever.”

“Forever?” Chained Angel asked. She laid her hand in his open palm. “Is that all?”

Her interior companion shouted inside her head. “Angelica. Pull yourself together. Don’t fall for his manipulations.”

“I wouldn’t do that.” Angel tilted her head and leaned in for a kiss.

Leading Man did the same. “Do what?”

“Fall in love with me.” Chained Angel smashed her forehead into the bridge of his nose. He dropped to the ground, sprinkling blood on the concrete from between hands clutching his face. “Do you really think your talent at Seduction is better than mine? You might be good, but I’m Divine.”

Becky sat in a wheelchair outside the reception room of the hospital emergency room. Her head hung low as she hugged herself with her arms.

        “Are you Becky Donovan?”

Becky shook for an instant as she woke up. She brought her head up and found Chained Angel kneeling before her. “Yes. I’m sorry. I’m Becky Donovan. Am I dead?”

Angel lightly giggled as she smiled. “No. Trust me, that’s not why I’m here. I wanted to check up on you. Are you and your baby alright?”

“Yes. They say it was only Braxton Hicks again.” Becky blinked a couple of times, clearing her eyes until she fully focused on Angel. “Why are you checking up on me? Don’t get me wrong, thank you, but I’m nobody special. Why would you care about me?”

“I used to think that about myself, too,” Angel said. “But I was wrong, just like you. Everyone is special. You’re very special to that little one inside of you.” Angel lifted up her hand and waved at Becky’s belly. “Hello.”

Becky covered her stomach with both arms. “What I mean is I don’t know you. Why are you here?”

“The police and I caught the people who stole your car.” Angel said. “They took it into evidence for now, but you should have it in a day or two.” Angel placed the deposit bag on Becky’s lap. “I did slip this away for you though. I know how upset bosses get when their money doesn’t make it to the bank on time.”

“Thank g...,” Becky started. She inspected the undamaged bag. “Thank you so much. I haven’t been able to call the home office yet. My phone was in the car too.”

Angel picked up Becky’s phone from the ground and placed it on her lap next. “I got that for you too. Do you have a ride home?”

“I called a taxi, but it hasn’t gotten here yet. My husband's at work out of town, so I didn’t have anyone else to come and get me.”

Angel stood up. “I can take you. Angel Express, at your service.”

Becky’s face lit up but then she settled back in her wheelchair. “I think I’ve had enough excitement for today. I think I’d feel better if I stuck closer to the ground, if you don’t mind.”

“I understand that.” Angel moved to a nearby empty seat. “How about I wait with you until the taxi arrives then?”

“That would be nice.” Becky nodded. She smiled at Angel through clenched teeth. “If you don’t mind my asking, how is my car?”

“Don’t worry. I set it down delicately on the roof of the downtown theater.”

         Becky’s eyes went wide.

Angel patted her gently on the knee. “Let me tell you what happened.”

How to write a Super-Story: Part 2

By Starmaster

When I last posted, I talked about defining your characters. How did that go?

Once you have those questions answered, a fantastic opportunity awaits you. On your character profile tab, there is a Character Sheet that includes several places to enter said information. Why do this, you might ask? The creators of Heroes Rising commented as to that earlier in the year in a blog post included in These City Streets, the HR news source.

“Do you want a cameo?”

While not every character can be featured during every story, that doesn’t mean they aren’t present. This information gives the creative staff an opportunity to highlight your participation in one of the “Lore” stories. It might not get you a power card or Morphons, but it is a nice feather in your super's resume to be used for bragging rights. “Yeah, you know I was there. I fought the _______. Got a good few hits in on them, too.”

Sharing this information also gives other players a chance to get to know you and your character. Active participation is always more fun than sitting on the sidelines, so take a moment and fill your Character Sheet out if you haven’t already.

Speaking of the “Lore” stories, check them out if you haven’t taken the time to read them yet. They are a good way to get information about the world of Heroes Rising to use in your own stories. These cannon tales give insights on past events, major players in the world, and are fun to read. While waiting for battles to recharge, take some time to look at them. You won’t be sorry.

As for your own storytelling, the next step to writing a great “super” story is the plot. What is happening to your character? As we write with the theme of super-powered characters, we sort of have an image in our head as to what will be happening. Big, bold adventures containing the four-color elements of the comic book genre. Who will your character be facing? How does the encounter start? Where does it take place? How does it end? Is there a twist? (The answer to this should always be YES. There should always be some type of twist or unexpected turn to the story.)

In one sentence, or short paragraph, outline what the story will entail. For example:
Starmaster saves a jock from an attack by an unknown team of cheerleading supervillains.
A crime syndicate robs a fellow superhero and steals their pet panda.
Morphon particles react with long-buried corpses and re-animate Adolph Hitler.

When you do your outline, remember that a good story should always include a beginning (or hook), a middle, and an end (or resolution). In the fiction forum, many of the posts are not an entire story, but rather chapters or ongoing collaborative projects. We can cover these types of storytelling later, but for right now, let's focus on telling one short, concise story of your own.

Whatever your idea is, write it down. Putting ideas into writing is a very important step. Keeping good ideas in your head only gives you time to self-critique or doubt your instincts about your story. Putting it on paper and/or typing it into copy makes it real. Plus, if you are like me, if I don’t write it down, I take a chance on forgetting it entirely. WRITE IT DOWN!

Think it over. Write some ideas down.

Until next time, may the light of good fortune shine on you!

We want your hero...

... to volunteer to be interviewed for our Hero Highlights.

I have interviewed many heroes to-date, but I’m sure there must still be a few that I haven’t had the pleasure of publishing... yet.

Some of you SHC ex-patriots surely wouldn’t mind a little publicity...

Some of you fresh-faced new supers must have a story or two...

Remember, volunteers will receive valuable cards as a reward, which may be used as powers, or sold for their Morphon value.

If this interests you, contact me, Krystal Fae (PID# 10962), to arrange your interview or leave your message by Facebook Messenger with my personal assistant, Chris, by PM at https://www.facebook.com/chris.evans.904750/

Thank you for your attention, and Good Gaming, my friends.

Powers Contest: Rainbow Legacies: The Taste of Ashes

Congratulations, Powerbottom, for placing third in the Powers Fiction Contest!

The twins walked into The Club. That in itself was unusual. They usually just appeared.

The Club was an uptrending dance club in New Amsterdam with a noticeable scarcity of both female patrons and shirts. A year ago, the crowd would have found that unusual, the appearing, not the walking. Let’s just say that the last year with the advent of morphons, attacks from the Legion, and the revelation that alien war refugees had lived among them for at least 700 years, had raised the bar for unusual quite a bit.

Most of the world knew them as Power Bottom and Underwatch. Any name the rest of the world knew them by was probably false. In their line of work, throwing around your real name was a poor life choice. In addition to being costumed adventurers, as your grandpa used to call them, Power Bottom and Underwatch often involved themselves in the supernatural goings-on of the world. Their families had ties to the preternatural spirits and realms of their parent’s home dimension.

The obligatory shadowy figure at the outskirts of the club watched them enter as he sized up the pair. Power Bottom was the more publicized of the two. He’d taken on the nome du adventure of his father. He had been attending college in this reality when the Morphon event occurred.

He’d intervened in several incidents since then. Despite having his own power set and skills, he insists on using the original Power Bottom’s methods of fighting otherworldly menaces.

“If he ever finds his way, he might be dangerous.” The stranger mused, turning his attention to Underwatch, Power Bottom’s brother.

Underwatch, widely considered the brains of the outfit,  knows where to find the information he doesn’t have. He’s in the public eye much less than his brother. Despite not having developed a morphon signature, people in the know consider him the more dangerous twin.

“The sky exploded, and these two have many worlds open to them. They get power, travel the world, hotties chasing them wherever they go.

I get a photographic memory, and not not the good kind. I can create a photograph of anything I see, which would have been a plus in my former career If I didn’t gain two feet in height and turn bright green.  I gained muscle, so I'm not a beanpole, but I didn’t receive anything you couldn’t do for yourself with a little hard work and a lot of body dysmorphia. I have the strength, dexterity, and body of an Olympic gymnast, which in this brave new super-powered world, makes me less than average.

So goodbye undisclosed government agency, hello exciting new career as a paparazzi, with a dislike for a specific frozen food company’s spokesman. Ho-Ho Ho, my Jolly Green @$$.”

Noticing that the pair walked-in dressed for fun and not work, he relaxed. Realizing things were unlikely to start exploding, he got to work.

Unsurprised that Power Bottom spends the evening dancing, drinking, and flirting. Underwatch spends the evening dancing, drinking, judging, and snarking. He decides that they’re attractive and mildly scandalous, so their pictures always sell well.

Realizing that the party pics will be average at best, he recalls another factoid about the twins,

The two can Travel. Rumor says it's genetic and not Morphonic, PB Travels from gay bar to gay bar while Underwatch Travels between closets. No one has ever seen this process, much less photograph it. Gambling that any number of unlicensed, morally ambiguous, scientifically inclined megalomaniacs would be willing to pay bank for the chance to replicate the process.

Slowly throughout the evening, he edged closer to the utility closet.

After several hours Underwatches eyes flare violet, and a distant look takes over his face. Power Bottom sighs as if reading his brother’s mind, and follows Underwatch towards the closet, their clothes transition into their uniforms as they walk.

The paparazzi yanks the door open as quickly as possible after PB closes it behind him. He takes a good look and screams as the world explodes.

*****

Across the country in Angel Port, a Different Light Books was ending a successful book signing. It had been a busy night. Sales were brisk, as much as they could be in a brick and mortar, independent book stores anymore. This one made extra money buying, locating, and selling exoteric books.

The staff cleaned the mess, brought order to the chaos, and moved to secure the door, hoping to encourage stragglers to leave.

One of the remaining customers had lurked at the edges of the crowd. (Seriously, these guys ought to form a union)

Everyone’s ears popped as the villain stood and made a gesture. The windows and doors of the building vanished, leaving solid walls.

“Follow my instructions, and you probably won't be hurt.” he intoned.“We would apologize for the inconvenience, but we really don’t care.”

Shadows around him blurred. Solid seeming silhouettes of himself emerged. The shadows flew forth and encased the bystanders restraining them.

With another gesture, a device appeared around the closet door. The more astute captives noticed the design of the machine was similar to pictures of captured Legion technology.

Smirking, he advanced to a large piece of Purple Beryl that seemed to glow gently. Attached to the crystal was a sign in comic sans stating, “In case of emergency, break glass.”

“This does seem to qualify,” he gloated, smashing the crystal to the ground.

Tedious minutes passed, and a lavender light surrounded the door’s edges as it creaked open. The device around the doorway flashed to life. An ominous void surrounded by a white nimbus of light replaced the doorway,

The shadowy figure laughed as the heroes and captives screamed, and the world exploded.

*****

PB appraised the situation. They’d never gated in the middle of an explosion before.

His brother had never screamed in pain and collapsed after traveling before.

Gathering his wits, he thought aloud, “What do we know?

Leo got an emergency psychic 911 because his pet bookstore shifted slightly sideways to reality. Of course, they called in the two best looking teleporters in the business. Underwatch and I stepped into a supply closet to transit to the bookstore. I closed the door, and Underwatch built a gate. At the same time, the jolly green paparazzi opened the door we were using. The debris outside of the door looks like a Legion Morphon gate.

So just my luck, we wind up with one door going four different places. We are aware that two objects can’t occupy the same space at the same time. I suppose this is what happens when two spaces occupy the same object at the same time.”

PB recalled that Leo was in a different reality when the Legion launched its attacks. They inherited the teleportation thing. This situation exposed him to a concentrated burst of morphons for the first time.

Checking for an immediate threat, PB realized that the explosion crammed the bar and the bookstore together inside the closet, who’s door had vanished.

Not seeing any bystanders or villains, PB checked on his Brother.

“I’m fine, but we should probably keep this verbal until we see what that did to me.”

“Agreed, but I’m not out of danger either. I felt your pain, and I’m still tingly.”

“Great.” Leo bemoaned, “Let’s explore and see what we can do to undo this mess.” He traced the rune for light engraved on his staff, focussed his will, and nothing happened.

“That’s less than good, bro,” PB observed while drawing the kunai with the rune of light on it and sighed. “Me too.”

“Evidently, we’ve changed enough that the spells on our gear no longer recognize us as us.

Should we try the sight?”

“It’s worth risking.” PB tried to switch to the enhanced vision that let them view supernatural forces and beings. Realizing he and his brother and his gear had already been glowing, he attempted shutting it off instead. “Mines stuck. I only see one way now.”

“Me too, separating our two worlds was always Pop’s hang up anyway. This is relatively low on my list of priorities.”

They both winked and imitated their Aunt Maggie, “PB, it bloody ridiculous that you want to blindfold them to half the things that want to kill them.”

“I always agreed with her, bro. But, it seemed so important to Pops. He tried so hard to train us to separate our sights.”

“I guess our way is different than his, PB. This gets better and better. Why aren’t there any bodies, hostages, bystanders, or targets?”

“We are right here.” The shadows shifted and drew together to form a monstrosity. A roiling blob that occasionally extended a human head or tentacles made of darkness.

A grey tentacle blasted towards Underwatch in a serpentine sweep. The glow surrounding him drained to his feet. A portal appeared, and he fell through it.

PB observed, “Leo got portal escape in the upgrade. That’s kind of cool.” The pressure that had been building since they arrived had vanished with his brother. PB cracked his neck, smirked, and assumed his taunt the a-hole posture.

“I’m glad he escaped. This isn’t the tentacle monster episode I wanted anyway. So tell me Shadow Bastard, Why are you calling us out?”

“You broke something that belonged to our creator. He put quite a price on your head and wants to send a message to BADGE and all other interfering parties to stay out of his affairs.”

“I don’t date married men, and my affairs usually get into…”

“Shut your filthy mouth.” The beast interrupted.

“Oh, did I touch Shadow Bastard’s nerve?”

“That is NOT our name. We are Splice.”

“Oh, is this Splice World? Tell me what you want. What you really, really…”

“You will be consumed like the others, and your power added to ours!!” Splice screamed.

“You keep interrupting me.” PB Sneered. “A good tentacle monster would let me finish. Eventually.”

The creature screamed and launched a barrage of serpentine sweeps at the hero.

As PB vanished into a portal, his brother reappeared. :What did you accomplish, Other than Pissing it off?:

:I counted heads. It cycled through 20 before repeating:

:Where did you land?:

:Where the bar used to be. You?:

:The former bookstore. I couldn’t get back in until you left.”

:Me too. I’ll keep trying. We need to figure out a way to attack or separate the victims from Splice:

:I’ll take things that are obvious for $1,800, Alex.:

:I’ll go for $2000. Twin radio still works.:

“You both will join us!!” The monster threatened while launching tentacles at Leo, Who portal leaped out of the way.

:PB,  if we simply use Portal Leap to move in the battle zone we don’t switch.:

:But Portal escaping as a defense does as it moves us out of the battle zone? Think we can use the portal to slice bits off Splice and separate the captives from him?:

:We don’t have that kind of control yet.:

:Being back in our reality made me realize I can see the arcane energies swirling around realities. I can see the way back to you. But I’m still blocked from getting there.:

:I don’t see that. It may be a key to your attack, though. Need to focus here, though.:

Leo took a defensive stance, but one of the tentacles struck him. He cursed, repeating a Name his father had used when upset. A lavender ring of arcane energy burst from him devastating all in its path.

Splice screamed in pain and outrage, “That Hurt.” He launched tentacles at Underwatch, who escaped telling his brother :I found Praxis Arcanus.:

:Don’t relax. I have an idea. This is probably going to move quickly now.: PB faced the creature. He focused the energies swirling around creation. The lavender glow surrounded his hands. He lept at Splice and grabbed a tentacle. The glow spread down the tentacle 20 voices cried out in pain as PB pulled separating a victim from Splice.

:Hey, Underwatch, how do we know who goes back to the club and who goes to the bookstore?:

:Patrons of bookstores generally wear shirts.:

:Oh Yeah. Good call.:

PB escaped, taking the victim with him. Leo attacked with his Praxis escaping to allow his brother to return to separate another victim. The battlefield strobed with violet energy as the twins Lept and escaped disorienting Splice until freeing all the victims and returning them to their city of origin.

Finally, PB stood over the defeated form of the criminal from the bookstore. “What are we going to do with you?”

“Explain my corpse to the authorities? Splice asked while grabbing one of PB’s knives and plunging it through his own heart.”

PB sighed:Someone’s dedicated. Ewwwwww! And not human, he just turned to goo and melted. Any Ideas on returning the real estate to its proper locations?:

:Use your portal and focus on the bar. I’ll try concentrating on the bookstore with mine. Maybe we can separate them.:

The brothers strained until PB eventually escaped dragging the Club with him. The bookstore returned to its proper space as well.

:We did it, bro, The bad guy, is vanquished. The victims are rescued. And a tear in reality is mended. We totally saved the day.:

:I hardly think we can call this a win PB.:

:What do you mean?:

:Our powers are reduced. Our equipment is unreliable. We participated in massive property damage and trauma to the victims. Instead of mending the tear in reality, we created a permanent standing portal between Angel Port and New Amsterdam, effectively shutting down at least two independent businesses. We saved the paparazzi who helped cause this, resents us, and can make pictures of anything he sees last. He basically has photos of you literally tearing the bad guy apart. We don’t have Splices body, and he hasn’t reappeared in either city. Which means you’re probably a suspect for murder. I’m probably an accomplice. And yes, we overcame the block on our teleportation and gained portals, but…:

:But what, bro? Why does it feel like you’re crying?:

:We’re trapped on opposite sides of the portal.:

:You’re still there? What’s there with the bookstore and Library gone? Want me to switch with you?:

:There’s no naturally occurring food, water, and air. I’m still immortal; you’re still human, mostly.:

:Jerk:

:@$$:

:It feels like home, though. Really. It might be in time. Get Auntie K. or someone in the 5th to make you some kind of environmental compensator, so you’re safe if our powers force us to swap.:

:This sucks, Leo:

:I know. Love ya, @$$.:

:Love ya too, Jerk.:

Heroes Rising Fiction: The Thief Part 9

Gar waited with a small gathering of BADGE robots in a tent just outside of Fort Knox. US military stood guard while heroes came and left in their ongoing mission of collecting the shards.

Gar kept a close eye on this, being the highest-ranked BADGE official at this location now. They gave him command of the collection, which was a first for him.

“Sir, we have five more heroes incoming.” A robot spoke to Gar.

Gar looked down at a computer tablet. “Good. Give them the clearance orders.”

“Understood.” The robot walked away.

Gar stepped away from the commotion and over to a special tent. Inside lay Strange Quark with Krystal Fae and EB next to his bed.

“Gar!” EB hopped over to him and hugged his leg.

“Hello, EB.”

EB hopped back to Quark's bedside. “He’s not well.”

Gar came over and looked down at Quark, who radiated red energy with parts of him going invisible and then returning to normal. “Can you fix him?”

Krystal gave off a sorrowful laugh. “He confounds even me. I have tried some healing magic on him since conventional stuff doesn’t do a thing. It didn’t work. All I can say is that he is in a state of flux.”

“Why did he explode when he touched those shards?” Gar asked.

“I...don’t know. We’ve gathered all the data from every sensor device even remotely scanning the area when this happened, and it doesn’t answer that question. This energy is unusual, and that’s all we have.”

Just then Chromatic Death came into the tent. “Hey, guys. Just got back with the shards I found. Not many, but I ain’t as fast as some of these heroes. How’s Quark?”

“Not good,” EB said.

Chromatic came over and looked down at the glowing hero. “I’ve seen some strange crap in my time, but this takes the cake.”

Gar was about to say something when he paused and gave Chromatic a curious look. “You called him Quark.”

“Yeah, that’s his name.”

Gar shook his head. “You have called him many things, most of which I do not understand, but you never called him by his name.”

Chromatic looked down at Quark with great sorrow. “He saved my life. I was a total jerk to him and he still was a true hero. The only dudes I ever show any kindness to are my League Mates, and even then I like to tease until they wanna punch me. Others, well, they get nothing but my rude attitude. It’s kinda my thing. And, this Quark guy, he got on my nerves from day one. You know. But even when he was hurt’n like hell, he protected me. That chick with the blades, she would’ve done me in, and he stopped it. I can’t be mean to anyone who would do that. Just wish I could tell him all this now.”

EB suddenly blubbered and bawled out, “THAT’S SO BEAUTIFUL!”

“Gah, no cry’n!” Chromatic yelled.

Gar smiled, “Quark will make it. He’s a strong...thing.”

Chromatic whispered, “I hope so.”

A gigantic shadow suddenly covered the tent, and the sides flapped hard in a heavy breeze. A robot stuck his head in and said, “Commander Gargoyle, Nova is landing.”

“Thank you,” Gar responded.

A large, new BADGE shuttle landed in the field near the collection of tents. Dozens of heroes either hovered in the sky or stood around, watching the small team from the Spacestation exit the aft doors of the craft.

Chromatic Death, Gargoyle, and Krystal Fae waited at the center of the tents. Director Nova approached as a team led by Dr. Henderson rushed in to collect Strange Quark.

Nova stood in front of the group. “Report?”

Gar waited a moment and then realized that it was his job to report since he was in charge here. “Oh, right, that’s me. Collecting has been difficult. It was harder to find the shards than we expected. Um, what did she say?” Gar looked back to a table with all the reports on it.

Krystal continued where Gar had forgotten. “The US military has conducted a thorough scan of the shard blast area for radiation signatures. The energy within the shards did not contaminate anything, and no clean-up will be necessary.”

Gar had a broad smile, “Yes, that was it. The radiation stuff. It’s good.”

Nova gave a gentle smile to Gar, “Good job, son. This was a big project for your first command.”

“Thank you, Director.”

“Now, show me to the collection.” Nova didn’t wait for an escort, he walked toward the center tent on his own.

Gar followed and showed him the tent filled with small, secure containers, each holding several shards. Chromatic and Krystal weren’t far behind.

Gar looked over at robot 10915, “Have the last heroes arrived?”

The robot answered. “They returned the final five shards four minutes ago. No further shards reported on any sensor sweep of the area.”

Nova asked the robot, “How many collected?”

“We have gathered ninety, sir.”

Dr. Hostetter from the University of Tennessee came into the tent. “Oh, hi there.”

Nova frowned at the man. “Who are you?”

“Oh, sorry.” He walked over and pumped Nova’s hand, “Dr. Mark Hostetter, geologist, and gemologist. I have been helping inspect the shards being brought in.”

Gar piped up, “I asked him to help. He knew a lot about this stuff.”

Nova asked, “Well, what’s the verdict?”

Dr. Hostetter looked down at the table with the various piles of ruby-colored items. “We have had forty-five shards brought in that appear to be from the same gem, one that exudes a unique energy signature.”

Nova asked, “Forty-five? But I thought we had ninety?”

“There are also pieces of gemstone and other minerals that are not related to the stone in question. Your people were good at gathering, but they weren’t entirely accurate. In fact, we also have pieces of glass and plastic that were mistakenly brought in.”

Nova examined the pile of ruby shards. “Is this all of them?”

Dr. Hostetter shook his head. “These won’t make a complete stone, these would only make half of the gem.”

Nova looked back at Gar, “Do we have any more shards coming in that you know of?”

“No, director. The last heroes out there cannot find any more signs of them.”

Nova shook his head, “Then our enemy got to the rest. Get these back to the station. Dr. Hostetter, would you care to join our team on the station for the time being? I could use your expertise in this.”

Dr. Hostetter had a broad smile, “My pleasure, sir.”

“Then help escort these up there, the robots will show you the way.” Nova watched the doctor and robots gather the shards and leave. He then turned to Gar and asked, “Any sign of Chase, anything at all?”

“No,” Gar softly answered.

“This makes no sense!” Nova suddenly blurted out, which startled everyone. “What happened to her?”

Chromatic said, “She’s a known thief. What’s the big surprise?”

Gar turned and was about to give Chromatic a reason to be afraid of him, but Krystal stepped in before the stone hero got in trouble. “Chromatic, Chase has changed. She’s not the same person she once was.”

Nova softly said, “I want to believe that. I need proof, something to hold on to as hope that this is not what it appears to be.”

Everyone was silent again, no one daring to speak or offer ideas.

Gar suddenly rushed out of the tent.

Nova looked back, “What is he doing?”

“I don’t know.” Krystal also watched him leave.

Gar bounded into another tent, and then came running back, holding something. He rushed right through. Both Chromatic and Krystal had to dodge his wings as he raced by. He slammed something on the table in the room and said. “THIS!”

Nova was still a little confused when he looked down at a knife. “What?”

Chromatic piped up, “That’s the blade she damaged my baby with. So?”

Gar said, “She doesn’t use these anymore.”

“What?” Nova asked.

Krystal caught on. “Wait, Gar has something there. Back when Chase fought Cupid, Fuma Hanzo gave her a pair of magical shuriken. They vanish moments after making contact with her target, and she can summon them again. It’s like having an endless supply of blades.”

Nova slowly picked up the knife. He stroked his beard as he looked it over. “Yes, I remember now. Those blades wouldn’t leave evidence like this. They’re sharper and more precise. Why would she use one of these old throwing knives?”

Gar said, “Something is wrong with her. And here is proof.”

Krystal said, “He has a point. But I don’t know where to go with this from here. I don’t know of anything, spell or power, that could turn a person evil like this.”

Nova stabbed the blade into the plastic surface of the table and left it lodged there. “All I need to know is that she’s being controlled and needs to be saved. That’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

Krampus silently watched his monitors. He watched BADGE clean up and leave the site they had used to collect the shards.

Chase came in and placed a satchel in front of him. “I did it. I was able to get forty-five of the shards before those heroes got to them.”

Krampus slowly opened the bag and looked inside. Unlike the shards of glass and plastic heroes accidentally gathered, these were all part of the same gem. “Only forty-five?”

“Yes.”

Krampus let out a rumbling growl from his chest as he said, “We had the chance to have ALL OF THEM, and you bring me HALF!”

Chase glared right back at him, showing no fear. “I did what I could, I was against hundreds of heroes working across five states! Where were you?”

He turned on her, grabbed her by the neck, and held her up. “Don’t you ever speak to me like that again!”

“We can get them back.” She gasped out.

“And we will.” He dropped her.

Just then the computer connected to the badge communicator beeped wildly. Krampus rushed over and checked it. “Ah, my data stream, I’m getting information from BADGE’s computers.”

“Is that good?” She asked.

“Depends on the information.” Krampus sent the data to the main computer and then checked on it. “Ah, I see...I see. How interesting.”

Chase walked up and looked at the screens. There were various displays of energy graphs and readings. A few camera shots were showing the moments Quark erupted in energy explosions, both inside Fort Knox and out in the field.

“What’s all this?” Chase asked.

Krampus smiled his loathsome grin. “Your little encounter with those heroes has provided me with valuable information. It appears I’ll be collecting yet another BADGE operative for my use.” He left this computer to work on other devices, where he would concoct his next phase.

Chase stood before this computer, looking at those fuzzy images of people near Quark. Quark was a red blur with a bubble of energy exploding off of him. However, it wasn’t him that drew her attention. She stared at the gray man with large gray wings.

“I...I think I know this person.”
