Hero Olympiad: End of Day Three - Finalists for Elemental Battles

Chaz Hamilton, back today with the results from yesterday's Elemental battles. In a competition that was both extremely spread out while being seemingly small compared to typical Chrono Events, heroes waged battle in theaters designed to accentuate their individual fighting strengths. The Avatars created this event to test the mettle of those who represented them and I doubt that any of the Avatars were displeased with the final results.

Hero Olympiad: End of Day Two - Finalists in the "Push-up" event

by Chaz Hamilton

Hello once again, sports fans. Day Two of the Hero Olympiad brought us an event that takes us all back to a junior high school gym class. Yes, the heroes all dropped to the ground and counted off as they rose and dropped while trying to find out who could do the most push ups. And they rose. And they dropped. And they rose. And they dropped.

And they rose.

And they dropped.

As it turns out, making people with superpowers do push ups isn't as exciting. I mean, sure, the heroes with super-speed made it look extremely easy and those with telekinetic powers simply levitated up and down, but other that a few stylistic differences, a push up is a push up.

There also seemed to be a fair amount of confusion on the process. Many heroes had visited the local gym and built up their skill at doing push ups over the last few months while on patrols, but the development of their overall skill was still a mystery. And while competing, there wasn't a clear course on what the best method was. There were many, many items that were used to give heroes a supposed edge, but the application of brute physical skill and time spent in the gym doing push ups didn't have a clear measure of how success was achieved.

I'm thinking that Mayor CJ's gym might become very popular in the future as heroes prepare for the next similar event. Lord knows, everyone has exercise gloves to spare for the next push up event.

In Division 3, the three medalists were:

One hundred and fifteen contestants entered in this division, which is forty more than entered into the "Most Wins" competition. The lowest number of push ups was 954 and the highest was 51, 646 by Gold Medalist INFIDEL of Suffering. Two relatively new heroes, MechaOgre and Angelus, took silver and bronze respectively.

In Division 2, the three medalists were:

Carnage out-did the competitors in Division 3, and Division 1 by a fair amount of push ups. It seems like Carnage was out to prove something, and he did. He can push up like nobody's business.

Bad News. No, nothing is wrong, but Bad News took the silver and SADIST took bronze in Division 2.

97 contestants entered in this division, three fewer than did the "Most Wins" event. I figure some people just needed a day to rest.

In Division 1, the three medalists were:

The Avenger 51 took gold in Division 1, leaving Sarg with silver and Nemesis with bronze. It is worth noting that Nemesis and Sarg did both place in the "Most Wins" event, making both of them the first multiple medalists in the Hero Olympiad. (Nemesis took gold and Sarge took bronze.)

Congratulations to both of these competitors.

84 contestants entered in Division 1, down from the 86 that were in Division 1 for "Most Wins"

Today, we find our heroes in a battle of the elements. Did they choose wisely or poorly for their elements? Time will tell. I'll report back on that tomorrow. Time for me to push.... off. Have a great day, Sentinel readers.

Hero Olympiad Fan Fiction: "Drop and give me all you can give!"

by Madam Marvelous ID#26130

The first day was a trial of combat. We each had to do our best to fight and win as many combats as possible. There were choices for how to do so. Fight each other in KOTM events, straight-up Battle challenges, or Fight Clubs. We could also go out on Patrols and hope to fight against thugs, dock pirates, and other seedy individuals we crossed paths with. New Amsterdam and Detroit were popular choices for many who chose this route.

I chose to stick close to home and do some good in my neighborhood in New Amsterdam. I didn’t want to go toe-to-toe with more experienced heroes yet. I spent a fair amount of time around this new inter-city Super Golf Course. In essence, my activities were all in a day’s work as I sought agents of the legion and, for some strange reason, golf balls. Going from location to location as opportunities opened up for me, I found bursts of Mad Speed almost everywhere.

At the end of the day, I went alongside Angelus to the scoreboard that showed the win numbers compiled by our BADGE communication devices and searched for my ranking. I started at the bottom of the list, fully expecting my score to be among the lowest.
“Well, Kitt’n, looky thar’,” Angelus said. “You’ve done good for a first-timer... Real good.”

I followed where his finger pointed. Out of all the people in my division, I PLACED SIXTH!! I drew in a deep breath and held it, thrilled at my score while at the same time doubting it. After exhaling, I tapped at the screen of my comm badge. “There… there has to be a mistake. I can’t have done that well. This has to be broken.”

“Horsefeathers,” Angelus scrolled his finger down the listing until he found his name at rank 12. “You done yer’ best. Some of these here fellers and ladies only show up to make it look like they are trying. To get what they can with the least amount of work. You put your back into it, girl. Be proud of yer’self. I darn tootin’ am.”

“Thanks, Angelus,” I said as I felt my cheeks warm. Even shapeshifters blush. “What do you think about tomorrow's event. Push-ups? I feel like I’m in gym class. I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep a straight face if Director Nova is down there on the field counting us off while wearing sweatpants and a whistle around his neck.”

“Now that would be a sight that could scare a blind man to see!” Angelus laughed. “Maybe we could have a bit of fun with that very thought?”

I couldn’t help but get a bit scared by his enthusiastic, yet devilish, grin on his face.
Isfet tapped him on the shoulder. “Methinks you’re getting ideas in your head that don’t belong there, love. Here, tilt your head lower so I can knock them out through your ear.”

MMMMMM

The next day, I joined Isfet and Angelus once again. The contestants were all lining up on the track around the arena field, waiting to get their assigned spot for doing their push-ups. The three of us waited in a dark hallway that lead beneath the stadium seats.

“OK. You know what Director Nova looks like. Change into him but wearing these clothes instead of his uniform.” Angelus said.

“No. No.” My face went hot. I couldn’t do what he wanted. I’d get kicked out for sure if they ever found out it was me. I held my hands up before me to push his offering of clothing away. “I could never do that?”

“Why not? You’re a shapeshifter, aren’t you?” Angelus asked.

“Our new playmate doesn’t want to play, love,” Isfet said. “The game isn’t any fun if people don’t want to play it.”

I nodded at her, pleased to have her support. Or what I thought was her support. Sometimes Isfet could be a bit hard to figure out.

“I’d die of embarrassment.”

Angelus seemed to deflate, his shoulders drooping and his head lowering to the ground. “I respect your integrity, Kitt’n, but it would have made a fair number of people smile. Seems like in a sad world like we live in every day, a bit of laughter would go a long way to making people feel better.”

I felt horrible. I liked Angelus and my new friendship with him. Shapeshifting into Nova wouldn’t be hard for me to do at all, so why shouldn’t I? My mouth opened to say yes but a bigger part of me restrained it. I wondered if my inner turmoil showed on my body as my insides struggled with deciding what to do.

“Give them to me,” Isfet said and a glistening, magical glamor surrounded her body. With a flare of light, she became Director Nova in a pair of tight shorts and a yellow shirt. “I care not what these others think but I would like to hear the lovely chimes of a chorus of laughter.”

With that, she walked out into the sunlight and waved at the assembled heroes.

"OK, you pathetic little babies, drop and give me a million!!!", called out the faux Nova.

Hero Olympiad : End of Day One - Finalists in "Most Wins" Competition

The first event of the Hero Olympiad has ended. The "Most Wins" challenge has given us three medalists in each division and hundreds of more active participants who rose to the occasion to participate.

In Division 3, there were 75 contestants between levels 1-40 (by BADGE Metrics). In total, these heroes clocked in a total of 4,601 wins. Of those 75, three fought hardest of all, each with over 300 wins of their own in battles across the globe.

In Division 2, 9,087 successful wins were fought by 99 heroes. Here are the top three:

In Division 1, there was a great deal of activity in the final hour. With the swell of battles fought, it became impossible to determine who would win until the final minute brought the competition to a close. 86 highly motivated competitors engaged in 18,969 winning battles. And the finalists in this division, drumroll please, came out to be...

Congratulations to all competitors who took part. You gave us an excellent show and I hope you enjoyed the opportunity to challenge yourself in new ways. Tune in tomorrow, Sentinel readers as I check in and bring you updates on the "Push Up" Challenge, another new and potentially exciting events. Let's see here who has some abs of titanium!!

Fan-Fiction: "Attending the Hero Olympiad" by Madam Marvelous

by Madam Marvelous (ID# 26130)

The magnificent arena for the Hero Olympiad stood before me. I leaned my head back and strove to take in the majesty of the building. How did they build this so quickly and without anyone knowing about it? My parents tried to build a garage on our property and complained for months about the rules, regulations, inspections, titles, architects, and dozens of other details the city insisted were necessary for new construction. Dad eventually gave up and bought an aluminum free-standing carport to keep his vehicle under. I think I need to get the info on BADGE’s construction firm for my parent’s anniversary.

I came with some friends I had made on the BADGE Orbital Space Station during my recent stay there. Angelus complained the entire trip over that there wasn’t a marksmanship competition.

“Bows and Arrows. Knife Throwing. Axe Throwing. It doesn’t have to be pistols,” he continued to whine. “Heck, I’d have been plum tickled if there had been a discus throw or shotput event like in the even older-days, but I have to contend with ping-pong? I feel like a gambler that’s done been dealt a hand of nothing but horse s—”

“There’s a young girl present, Angelus,” Isfet said. The two of them were in the same league together, the Scottish Claymores - MacGreggors. She accompanied us, and I liked her, even though I was fairly surprised to see her there with us. I will admit, she had great taste. Her costume looked a lot like my Madam Marvelous costume.

“Sweet tarnations, Isfet. The only way to let me get a burr free is if I work it out from under my saddle,” Angelus said. “Kitt’n here’s heard worse, I’m sure.”

There was a large brazier burning I before the entrance. I handed Angelus my phone. “Here. If you want to shoot something, shoot a picture of me next to that.” I shifted into my Madam Marvelous form that I planned on competing in. It was time for me to start building a name for myself.

Angelus scoffed. “This ain’t the same, but as you wish, little lady.”

I struck a pose so I wouldn’t forget being at my first Hero Olympiad. I hoped I would do well, but I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Many others shared the same questioning face I had. What would it be like? Would we all just lay down on the arena floor and start doing pushups? Most wins at what? Contests of Skill? Elemental Battles? A marathon? The events were still a bit of a mystery.

“Say Sarsaparilla,” Angelus said.

“What happened to cheese?” I asked.

“Are you taking this photograph, or am I? The word is Sarsaparilla!”

I smiled, more from his reaction that to the need to look pretty for a picture.

“Should we head in?” Isfet asked. “I think they are getting ready to start making announcements soon.”

Fireworks exploded overhead. Heroes were directed to walk the track and be announced as they entered a promenade celebrating their notoriety. After completing a lap, we were directed to hallways leading to stairs up to the audience seating.

We climbed the steps up into the stadium seats surrounding the open arena field. Hundreds of other heroes were there, some dressed in their hero costumes, some in athletic wear, and a few in traditional Greek clothing. I waved at Ms. Fae as she sat in the opposite section of the vast structure. She wore a white toga and laurel wreath upon her head. As she waved back, I had to wonder if she modeled for one of the ancient statues I’d seen at the New Amsterdam Art Museum. I knew she wasn’t that old herself, or I didn’t think she was, but the resemblance was uncanny.

I recognized many others of the people in attendance from the 4th of July party. I couldn’t help but to be a bit star struck. Captain Picard was there, as well as several members of the 5th Precinct leagues. Rapscallion of another group of the Scottish Claymores - Stewarts pseudo-saluted Angelus. The Sword of Geraxia and Astra were both there, as was Zombie Ex-Girlfriend. The WMD – Black Order commanded one entire section to themselves.

“Why don’t we mosey on up to the front there and get within spitting distance of the speakers.” Angelus held up his hands after Isfet gave him a stern and entirely disgusted look in response to his suggestion. “I’m not plannin’ on doin’ any spittin’, it’s only a turn of phrase darlin’.”

“Up front will be fine,” I said.

EB was at the microphone tapping at it. “Testing…Testing…Testing…”

"It works fine. Leave it alone!” Nova’s hushed, but emphatic, voice came over the loudspeakers.

We took our seats and awaited the announcement of what would most likely be a very eventful few days.

Hero Olympiad: Day One - Most Attacks Won

The Hero Olympiad has begun.

In a timely nod to historic tradition, BADGE has once again fostered an event meant to bring our heroes together in the spirit of friendly competition. OK, maybe mostly friendly, as there will be plenty of beatdowns going on for today’s themed event.

MOST ATTACKS WON

There are three division for this competition where heroes have been evaluated into groupings by their levels of experience. The lowest division, Division 3, is made up of newer contenders or contenders who manage their ascension into higher League War divisions. From level one, which is the newest level of hero to level 40, these combatants have to balance their efforts to actively participate vs their gains. Morphon powers of our heroes seem to increase as they engage in combat activities, especially when victorious in the effort. Many of these heroes are deliberately pacing themselves to remain in this ‘sweet spot’ to maximize their relative gains.

With 59 different heroes currently engaged in efforts to be the ‘winningest’, it seems that participation in this division might be underutilized. If you are a hero out in the world, no matter what your capability, please join in. There is said to be a reward at the end of the Olympiad for each participant who actively competes in every round.

In Division Two, we find heroes that are more powerful than newbies but not as tough as the upper crust of heroes. Let’s call this the Jan Division, as they are caught in between the powerhouses that slowly climb the hill to power and the ultra-powerful members whose names we all recognize.

Well, that isn’t entirely true. The current first place position holder in Division 2 is none other than Slayer B.A.S., most likely one of the most feared contestants on the field by vampires across the globe. Division 2 has a bit more flexibility to it than Division 3, as it goes for a larger field of competitors (levels 41-200). With 80 contestants currently fighting on Patrols, Battles, Fight Clubs, Missions, and bathroom stalls, the wins are adding up. Observers can clearly see that contestants in Division 2 are more willing to throw down than those in Division 3 based on the numbers of fights fought and number of participants.

Division 1 is a madhouse of Brawls, Duels, and KOTM challenges. When the order was given to fight, these heroes didn’t even make it out of the stands before they threw their punches at one another. I lost track of how many fights I’ve seen credited to this division. The gloves are on here and punches aren’t being pulled. In fact, many of these contestants have been seen visiting locations where lower rated heroes gather and simply wiping the floor with them. A win is a win after all, even if it is against a moose-eating tree in a New Amsterdam park.

77 Olympiad contestants currently battle in Division 1. An interesting observation I have heard about the heroes who seek out their fights while on Patrol is that they are constantly stopping and picking up gloves, bowling balls, instant ramen, and multi-vitamins while they defeat villains. Clearly, they are taking advantage of the opportunity to stock up on supplies for the events being held over the next few days.

While the top three in each division will be rewarded with accolades and rewards of Gold, Silver, and Bronze, there is also a strong incentive to place in the top 50 for each division. BADGE is granting special Morphon rewards based on ranking in these events. A hero that places in the top 10 over each of the five days of competition could easily have the opportunity to participate in the ultra-desirable Nova Mystery Shuffle and collect new bits of gear and other rewards to benefit their efforts.

Each night I will report on the top three participants in each division of these Olympiad events. And participants are also welcome to contact me directly for comments on their participation on the events taking place. The Sentinel is home to all your voices, not just mine. I am happy to hold the mike for you to speak to our readers.

Good luck, heroes. I can’t wait to see who our medalists will be. (Betting windows are open.) In the end, it is going to come down to who is the most dedicated and disciplined in their drive to claim the prize. It could be anyone's game.

Heroes, be Prepared. Something approaches...

 by Chaz Hamilton

shhh... OK, I'm only sharing this information right now because I always believe you, our heroes, need to be aware of what is going on. What I'm about to share with you is meant to be kept hush-hush for now. I don't have all the details yet, but something is going to be happening soon.

It all started a few days ago. I was on the BADGE Orbital Space Station and I saw EB hopping down one of the corridors after a meeting with Nova. He was acting suspiciously. He didn't offer an egg to anyone. His head was down and he was flipping through notes and files as he went along his merry way. A bit of paper, jostled out by his up-and-down movement, fell onto the floor behind him.

I fully intended to pick up the piece of paper and return it to him, but something made me want to look at it first.

This is what I found...

Plans for just a few days from now. I caught up to him and politely asked how he was doing.

"Oh, um, I'm fine. Busy, busy, busy. Have to get ready for next Easter, you know."

"So there wouldn't happen to be anything interesting around the corner for our heroes, would there?" I asked.

"Oh, no, no, no. Seriously, no. Nothing at all."

I knew he was lying, of course. Since when is EB ever serious about anything. He rapidly sprinted away from me before I could return what he had dropped. If he wasn't going to tell me, I decided to find out for myself.

Any reporter worth his salt has a contact or five they can rely on for clues. My confidential source revealed to me that EB and Nova had been traveling, inspecting some sites for a undisclosed purpose. Using the elaborate facial recognition program that BADGE employs to find criminals, my source was able to find this image for me from earlier in the day.

My curiosity was more than piqued. My reporter's nose was itching like I was Frost interviewing Nixon. Something was definitely afoot, and it was bigger than EB's sizable feet.

I asked around some more, talking to various heroes and trying to understand what might be underway. Nobody seemed to have a clear idea, but just yesterday, I came across an interesting internet share.

Shinobi had been in New Amsterdam on Patrol. He fought villains and criminals as normal, using his skill and prowess to bring justice to miscreants who sought to do wrong. Rumors have been floating around about new organizations out to get their hands dirty against our worlds heroes, and not just the one that seems to be connected to the missing Avatars.

No, there are said to be other groups out their targeting leagues across the board. There is even one named Villains Inc that is said to be throwing cash around and aiding ne'er-do-wells with their problems. I'm still digging into this story, but more on that later.

As for Shinobi, he found some interesting paraphernalia that he hadn't seen before.

Another hero in a nearby area discovered a different type of performance enhancer in one of the Black Markets.

What could be the thread that connects these clues into one big story? I used another favor from one of my contacts and stole a peek at Director Nova's schedule for the next week and found this...

Most wins? Push-ups? Element Battles? Contests of Skills? A marathon? These weren't terms typically used in the League War events. This was something new.

This is something new.

Heroes, I don't know what you can or should do to prepare for what is coming, but forewarned is four-armed... Hold on, wait. That's not right. I mean, yeah, sure, it's a super power I've heard of, but in this case I mean Forearmed. Keep an eye out for other hints and clues. Let me know what you find out.

Until then, keep a watchful eye out. New things are popping up now that Purgatory Penitentiary is letting criminals escape once more. Will the world ever be safe again?

****UPDATE****
While no further details have been presented, there is now a new codename being circulated around BADGE--- Hero Olympiad

Hero Highlights- Madam Marvelous

Today's Subject has become quite active of late. One of BADGE's most recent recruits, this young heroine shows true promise, I'm quite certain that everyone will soon know of her exploits if they don't already.

Can you tell us your name, or would you prefer your Hero designation/code name?

MM~ I don't have my parent's permission to give out my given name yet. They want me to be cautious, you know, with the Avatars being kidnapped and everything else going on. Safety first, right.

You can call me Madam Marvelous, or whatever you like, to be honest. I mean, gosh, I never thought I'd get to be interviewed by THE Krystal Fae! Wow.

This is like the coolest thing ever... well after meeting Director Nova.
Oops. I'm so sorry. I love you, but he's Nova.

Are you working thru B.A.D.G.E. or are you independent?

MM~ BADGE recruited me and until I am of age, I'm supposed to only go on their sanctioned missions. But if I happen to be going out for a walk or something and happen to see something bad going on, well, I have to do something, don't I?<wink>

Are you currently in a League, and if so, would you care to tell us about it?

MM~ I am exploring my options right now. If they will have me, I think I'm going to apply to Time's Arrow.

They are a good training league I hear. It never hurts to train. Unless you are doing combat training. A sock in the gut is going to hurt no matter what, right?

Can you tell us a little about your powers? Are all of your powers Morphon-based?

MM~ I am a second-generation exposee. My parents were exposed to Morphons but never developed abilities, but had some genetic alterations nonetheless.

I was exposed to Morphons and, well, boom. As for what I can do, I'm fairly strong, but could get stronger, rather clever, and can change into a variety of forms.

I'm actually going to start testing with BADGE soon to make more determinations about what all I can actually do. I'm sorry. I didn't answer that question very well. Can I try again?

Do you have a sidekick?

MM~ No, but if you're looking for one, Ms. Fae, I'll take the job.

Could you tell us a little about your origin?

MM~ My parents made me sign an N.D.A. about that one. I'm not happy about it, but what can a girl do? It's a great story that deserves to be told. Ask me again when I'm legally free to respond.

What is your favorite piece of gear? Why?

MM~ I've picked up a few things here and there that are supposed to help me 'hero' better, but none of them are that cool. I guess I'd have to say my Thunderclap Pantaloons. I <ahem> got them after they fell of the back of a truck somewhere.

OK, yeah, I know. Don't look at me like that. I got them in a Black Market I found while walking around New Amsterdam.

Heroing is expensive and my allowance isn't that big. Can you blame me? Please, don't turn me in. PLEASE!!!!

Do you Have any advice for other new Heroes?

MM~ Ummm. Newer than me? Ummm... memorize the BADGE emergency hotline number.

Is there anything else you'd care to add?

MM~ Wow. Well, have you made a decision about that sidekick thing yet? I think we could be better than Batman and Robin. Xena and Gabrielle. Captain Janeway and Seven of Nine. And I'm a great babysitter, too, when you need one.

WE could even use that as my cover. "Hi, Mom, I need to go babysit for Ms. Fae again."

We'll see... I might need some help at some point, I suppose... In any case, thankyou for your time today.

I'm certain this won't be the last we'll hear from you.

Until next time, my friends...

The Hanzo Ninja Clan School Of Anything Goes Martial Arts

Player ID 10950

Orientation And Lesson 1: How To Take A Hit

Orientation
It has come to my attention that most players still don't know how the basic gist of the mechanics work. This isn't just the case in the lower levels, but even among many of the elite players as well. Our Mayor Justice comes to mind, for example. While there is no definitive knowledge outside of the devs for how the mechanics work exactly, we can make educated assumptions through careful observation of trial and error. In many cases, this is done through isolation of specific mechanics to see how tweaking the stats involved effect outcomes.

These have long been held as trade secrets, carefully guarded by those that know them. So few know them in fact, that some players even at the highest echelons, like our Mayor Justice for example, haven't even bothered to learn them as there aren't enough people using these edges to matter in their minds. However, as many of you know, I have retired from competitive play and am now blowing the doors to these trade secrets wide open, so that this knowledge is available to all players. And if players like Mayor Justice wish to continue to thrive in this new environment, they'll have to learn them too or die a miserable death on the field of battle to the likes of Wizards and Zen Master Anomalies.

So welcome to our first class at The Hanzo Ninja Clan School Of Anything Goes Martial Arts. I will start with the absolute basics, so as not to make any assumptions on where anyone is at with their knowledge of the game. I've already made that mistake countless times with our notorious Mayor Justice.

LESSON ONE: How To Take A Hit

The basis of your hero or villain's build starts with their base stats. These stats are ATTACK, DEFEND, and MOVE. These stats are the basis for how fight outcomes happen. There are two other stats, LIFE and ENERGY, but they are less important and we will get into them later. These three stats in particular are the most important of all.

As stated during orientation, only the devs know the exact algorithm, and they have changed it often enough that anyone trying to pinpoint an exact bead on it has been thwarted. Still, a basic understanding that has held true throughout all the fight mechanics iterations up until now does exist. Each of these three stats does two things. Some in conjunction with each other and others in opposition of each other.

ATTACK:
1) Attack determines how much base damage your attacks do before modifiers, aka your Damage stat.
2) Attack combines with Move to create the Precision stat. Precision is your toon's ability to hit your opponent.

DEFEND:
1) Defend determines how much base damage reduction against an opponent's attack your toon does. This is your Damage Reduction stat. Consider this akin to your toon's toughness.
2) Defend combines with Move to create the Dodge stat. Dodge is your ability to avoid your opponent's attacks.
Note****
The Damage and Damage Reduction stats are in direct opposition to each other.

MOVE:
1) and 2) Move combines with Attack and Defend, as described above, to create the Precision and Dodge stats of your toon.
Note****
The Dodge and Precision stats are in direct opposition of each other.

How do we increase our stats?

There are two base methods, power cards, and to a lesser degree, gear. There are three types of cards of varying acquisition and power levels. Each type reflects each stat type, Attack, Defend, and Move, but carries stats for all three categories. Generally, whatever type of stat card it is will be reflected in higher numbers for that specific stat.

When deciding which stats to try and build up, consider what each does. While it is important to be able to both to do damage and take damage, if you can't hit your opponent, no amount of Damage matters, and if your opponent can't hit you, no amount of Damage Reduction matters. Furthermore, there are other variables that come into play which we'll discuss later like Plus Damage and X Damage. So, for far more than those two stats, your Precision and Dodge stats are the most important. When it comes to each, Attack and Defend only play in one each. But Move plays in both, thus making Move your most important stat of all. That said, when forced to choose between growing these three stats, in general, it is best to increase your Move stat. All other stats effectiveness, as well as the effects of gear are 1st and foremost dependent on this stat. That doesn't mean ignore the other stats. Attack still plays in the Precision stat and Defend still plays in the Dodge stat, as well as the outcome of successful attacks. But by concentrating on Move, you increase your ability to leap 2 of the first hurdles needed for anything else to matter.

As you level up, you acquire two Skill Points per level. These can be distributed between 5 stats, Attack, Defend, Move, Life, and Energy.

For the Attack, Defend, and Move stats, each Skill Point acts as a multiplier for their base stats given them by their power cards. This is a huge way to increase your base power exponentially, and is the primary place you need to be putting your Skill Points. Remember what was said earlier about Move being the most important stat. You will want to put the vast majority of your Skill Points into Move. In fact, early on, it is highly advisable to put as much as ALL of your Skill Points into Move. But this will change in time due to diminishing returns.

At first, each Skill Point in these three stats gives a 0.5% multiplier towards the base stat value. So, if I have 100 base Move, and add my first two Skill Points to it for 0.5% each, equaling an additional 1% Move, my Move is now 101. But, as you put more and more Skill Points into a stat, the amount of positive return decreases. The transition of diminishing returns is shown below.

Level 1 to 20: 1 Skill Point = 0.5% stat multiplier
Level 21 to 164: 1 Skill Point = 0.33% stat multiplier
Level 165 to 465: 1 Skill Point = 0.25% stat multiplier
Level 465 to ????: 1 Skill Point = 0.20% stat multiplier

As you can see, the more Skill Points you put into one stat, the fewer your gains per Skill Point. This is what we call diminishing returns. While it is important to add Skill Points to Move in the beginning, at some point it becomes more advantageous to start putting those points in your other two stats.

At what point might this be? Well, remember that a point of Move is equal to a point of Attack and a point of Defend, when overcoming the 1st hurdle of battle, hitting your opponent and avoiding your opponent's attacks. So, at the point where it costs over twice as many Skill Points to increase Move as it does Attack or Defend, is where you want to switch your Skill Point allotment up to your other two stats, Attack and Defend.

For example, if you have yet to put any Skill Points into Attack or Defend, then one Skill Point will give you a 0.5% multiplier for that stat. If a Skill Point put in Move equals less than half that number, so less than 0.25%, it is time to start adding your points to Attack and Defend until the ratio is again where two stat points in Move are equal to one in Attack or Defend.

The reasoning here is that by adding 1 Skill Point to each your Attack and Defend, you increase your Dodge and Precision stats by an equal amount as if you put both Skill Points into Move. What difference does this make? After all, the outcome is the same, right? Well yes, if you only consider one's ability to hit or dodge. But remember that Attack and Defend also each serve another function, damage tallying. By putting your Skill Points into Attack and Defend at this point, you maintain the same rate of Precision and Dodge, while increasing your Damage output and Damage Reduction.

The Other Two Stats

Before we move on to gear, let's take a second to look at the other two stats one can put Skill Points into, Life and Energy.

Life
Putting points into life is pretty much a waste of time. Those Skill Points are far more valuable elsewhere. A single gear can easily give out as much life as 25 levels worth of Skill Points. Furthermore, when considering gear bonuses, a gear bonus of 10% Life would require the toon's base Life stat to equal 1000 before it equaled what one gear with 100 Life offered. That's a level 200 toon with Skill Points resting solely in the Life Stat. Perhaps one day when toons are in the several thousands of levels might this stat be worth putting points into, but not at the current time..
Energy
There really are few reasons to add Skill Points to Energy. The absolute most performance minded toons will put as few Skill Points as possible into this stat. The only purposes increasing this stat serves is allowing you to put more fights into Fight Club, and to allow yourself more time to collect energy between gaming sessions without going over your max.

Frankly, you're going to gain more experience points through fights than through expending energy. It's far better spending your Skill Points to make yourself a better fighter than it is to be able to save up energy for longer periods of time. If more Skill Points in this area increased the rate at which you gained energy, that might be different, but that isn't the case here. So unless you really want to win Fight Clubs, I would forgo putting any Skill Points here at all. If you really want to win Fight Clubs though, wait to increase your Energy stat until you are winning for every energy spent in Fight Club. For example, if on average, you're winning all your fights in Fight Club but can only fight 8 opponents max, increase your Energy stat so you can fight 9. But if you can only beat 7 usually, now is not the time to increase your Energy stat.

Patrols: The Black Market

By Madam Marvelous (ID# 26130)

As heroes, I know we are supposed to be paragons of virtue. Doing the right thing at all times, no matter what the cost might be. That’s all well and good most of the time, but let’s face it. Being a hero isn’t cheap. We get to face all the bad guys we can handle, but hardly ever reap the rewards that the bad guys seem to get so easily.

The new Patrols I have been performing have typically been a fun adventure, but every so often I come across a little shop that sells a variety of items at a discount price. Mostly these offerings are consumables but occasionally you will encounter a piece of gear that might be useful. Some of the time, the offered consumables are what could easily be described at costly lemons. Is it wise to buy any of these objects?

Here are my thoughts on items I’ve encountered on the Black Market and whether they are worth the price?

Best Buy: Hero Cape

The Hero Cape costs 5 MP to purchase, but when you use it, you gain 30MP when leveling instead of only 10. In essence, buying a Hero Cape at 5MP will earn you 20 extra Morphon Points, or a net gain of 15 MP more than the 10MP you would gain without making use of our trademark capes. There isn’t really a downside to getting more MP, is there?

Buy it if offered? Heck ya!

Buy with Caution: Consumables that give temporary Resistance bonuses

Consumables are extremely useful. Who doesn’t go through a day without eating 14 More-Fun Bars or drinking 14 Hateraide beverages? When you need them, they are great to have, but are they worth paying MP for? Beginning heroes might be tempted to buy them because they are offered. I would advice using your best judgement. Will you receive and equal benefit to what you spent to get the consumable? Maybe if you are trying to hold a position on a KOTM event?

I can’t see it, not while there are other ways to stock up on consumables during special events and RAID combats.

Buy it if offered? I wouldn’t, but you do you. Just don’t complain to me about it later.

Good Buy: Power Cards

Occasionally, I have seen Power Cards come up as available to purchase in the Black Market. They are often at a significant discount to the typical cost. For instance, a friend recently had the chance to buy the power to TRAMPLE their opponents for 38MP. I looked it up at the store, and the same Power Card would cost 58MP. That isn’t too bad of a discount.

That would leave enough to tier the Power Card up one level.

Buy it if offered? It depends on the card. If it is one you want, a deal is a deal. Take advantage of it.

Good Buy: Gear

Gear is often difficult to come by outside of the store. While not every offered piece is going to be useful in every situation, it never hurts to have it in your closet should the need arise. Unlike Consumables, Gear isn’t a one-shot use. For example, a piece of gear I was offered was a pair of Thunderclap Pantaloons. Not a fantastic option, but as a newer hero, I was able to get them for 99MP rather than the 230MP in the store. If I happen to face a villain or situation where Elemental damage is a plus, I have them.

Otherwise, I leave them in the closet to add to the static cling of my sweaters.

Buy it if offered? If the discount is worth it, go for it. You never know when it might come in handy. (Plus, if you do not close the transaction window, but instead go to the Armory Tab, you can check prices on many items and make an informed choice. Then go back to the Patrol tab and reselect the triggering event. The option should still be available to you to purchase or decline.)

Stinkeroo Buy: Lucky Rabbit

OK. First, it is definitely not a Lucky Rabbit. It is a foot from a rabbit that was very, very UNLUCKY! Seriously, it lost its foot. I can’t think of anyone that needs money so badly that they carry a severed appendage around on a keychain.

And exchanging 6MP for something that gives you Bux? Take an economics class. This deal stinks more than the rotting foot does.

Buy it if offered? NO, no, no, no, no. There are far better ways of making Bux out there.

I hope some of these reviews help you while bargaining with the Black Market. I’m sure over time there will be many, many more items offered by these shady marketers. Follow Rule of Acquisition #3: Never spend more for an acquisition than you have to.

Until next time,

Madam Marvelous

In The Room with Lykos

Good day, Sentinel Readers. Chaz Hamilton here. Today, I am speaking with a hero that has been very active in the world of late. If you look up in the sky and see a streak of purple, it is most likely this fellow here, out doing his heroic duty on patrol or his day job as an online shopper.

Chaz: "Welcome, Lykos. How are you doing today?"

Lykos: “I’m very excited to be here with you Chaz. I look forward to seeing you on the scenes of big events and getting my fifteen-minutes-of-fame appearances in. So far, I’ve been on screen for 1 minutes and eleven seconds. I’ve recently broken 300 Facebook followers! Whoo-hoo. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in it for just the attention. I’m trying to do the right thing too, of course, but if I’m going to strike fear and awe into the hearts of villains at the mere mention of my name, I need to build up my street cred.”

Chaz: “I suppose branding is very important in today’s world. Big names like the Avengers, Colony 51, and WMD Black Order don’t succeed in a vacuum.”

Lykos: “Tell me about it. I was using one of those industrial strength vacuums once and it nearly tore my costume off when my cape got caught in the hose. Vacuum’s really suck, and not in the good way.”

Chaz: “What were you using the vacuum fo… Let’s not go there. Lykos, how did you get your super-hero name?”

Lykos: “Lykos is Greek for Wolf. I used to play a game in my ‘Other Life’ and it had a reference to The Lykos Project. I have used it ever since and it just carried over to my Hero Days.”

Chaz: “Interesting. Which of your powers is your favorite? Which one is the most difficult for you to master?

Lykos: “I love having the Super Strength. It has been really helpful in dealing with the Super Bad Guys so I have loved it. Flying is definitely the hardest for me. I have never been good with roller coasters and this isn't much better. Did you ever watch that old show "Greatest American Hero"? That is pretty much me trying to fly.”

Chaz: “I’ve heard about it. It was a few generations before my time, but I hear they are considering a reboot.”

Lykos: “That would be way cool. I could star in it. Now that Arx is out of work, they could save bank by using me as my own stunt double.”

Chaz: “Of the heroes I’ve met so far, you are one of the few that uses your gifts for average Joe employment. You've been seen using your powers while working for various delivery businesses. Are you having trouble finding work that makes better use of your abilities?”

Lykos: “I have been, yeah. I have never been a "Work with your hands" kind of guy. So, I am trying to find work that fits my personality - which is working with the public. Being a Cape doesn't pay though, ya know? Delivery works well for letting me use my powers AND working with the public. And delivery is pretty popular with the whole COVID thing.”

Chaz: “I don’t doubt that. Other than the Greatest American Hero guy, do you have a mentor? A superhero you admire from all the big names in the Heroes Rising dimension?”

Lykos: “I have Silver Paladin and Starmaster that I have been listening to, co-members of the Star Force with me. I am terrified of Highlander, but I have a bit of a "Hero Worship" going on. One of the very first people to help me out though was Gatekeeper Arosha (#20314). He helped me make a ton of friends here in New Amsterdam.”

Chaz: “ As a down to earth hero, let’s get to know a few personal details about you. Do you have a favorite food truck operation? What is your favorite dish they serve?”

Lykos: “Oh DUDE, I totally do! It is called the Rolling Gourmet! Their colors are Purple too, which is MY favorite color and their food is amazing. They make great burgers but they also have the most amazing Tacos.”

Chaz: “OK readers, if you want a chance to meet Lykos in person, be sure to venture to the Rolling Gourmet. You might catch him there getting himself a double with extra bacon.”

Lykos: “Triple bacon. You can put bacon in anything and make it better.”

Chaz: “I don’t think many will disagree with you on that, sir. How about a support system, for when you have a bad day heroing? Do you have any family with powers like yours?”

Lykos: “No, mine are pretty unique to just me; no family got hit with particles, I guess. I wonder what would have happened if my brother had gotten some though. I am curious what his powers would have been.”

Chaz: “There have been several studies into that very topic. I hear that parents have options now for tests to determine what Morphon Powers their children might develop. It isn’t a guarantee, but how else are new parents supposed to baby-proof their home without certain insights?”

Lykos: “Yeah. If I had my powers as a kid, my rear end would still be glowing red from daddy’s whoopins’.”

Chaz: “On a more serious note, what is your goal in life?”

Lykos: “Dude, I am still working that out. I was kinda meandering in life as it was BEFORE the Morphons. I had always dreamed of having superpowers, read comics like crazy as a kid, but I never thought I would get them. I just don't know where I fit in now. But is that any different than before?”

Chaz: “That’s deeper than I want to go for right now. That’s some Oprah level talk there. Rapid-fire question: Below the spandex, is it boxers or briefs?”

Lykos: “Briefs chafe dude. I had to go with Boxers.”

Chaz; “What is your biggest regret as a superhero?”

Lykos: “I wish I had not grown so fast in power without learning to use them better. I seem to be strong, but not strong enough for where I should be. I need to slow down and stop and smell the roses, you know? I need to take time to understand my powers.”

Chaz: “I am aware you got your powers while drinking some Dr. Pepper? Do you still drink the stuff?”

Lykos: “I LOVE Dr. Pepper. I am not going to let a little thing like Morphons stop that. I'm a Pepper til the day I die.”

Chaz: “You’ve also been seen with a gorgeous dog by the name of Fluffy at your side. Where did you get Fluffy? Is he a rescue puppy?”

Lykos: “Fluffy is from a long line of pups I have had over the years. I have had Fluffy's parents and grandparents going back to when I was a kid; as long as I can remember.”

Chaz: “Now that is dedication and loyalty. Two perfect words I’ve found to sum you up, Lykos. Thanks for meeting with me today. It’s been an honor.”

Lykos: “Geez, man. Thanks. You’re gonna make me blush. I’m grateful to you for talking to me. Tell you what, next time you need some groceries, give me a call. It will be on the house. And don’t worry, I’m a discrete shopper. I won’t tell anyone if you order Preparation H or anything weird like you did a couple weeks ago. I am the soul of discretion for my loyal customers.”

Chaz: “ssshhhhhh… <Chaz clears his throat> This has been Chaz Hamilton, bringing you Sentinel readers another installment of In the Room. We will see you next week with another interview that you won’t want to miss. Big things, people, big things are coming.”
