Patrols: The Black Market

By Madam Marvelous (ID# 26130)

As heroes, I know we are supposed to be paragons of virtue. Doing the right thing at all times, no matter what the cost might be. That’s all well and good most of the time, but let’s face it. Being a hero isn’t cheap. We get to face all the bad guys we can handle, but hardly ever reap the rewards that the bad guys seem to get so easily.

The new Patrols I have been performing have typically been a fun adventure, but every so often I come across a little shop that sells a variety of items at a discount price. Mostly these offerings are consumables but occasionally you will encounter a piece of gear that might be useful. Some of the time, the offered consumables are what could easily be described at costly lemons. Is it wise to buy any of these objects?

Here are my thoughts on items I’ve encountered on the Black Market and whether they are worth the price?

Best Buy: Hero Cape

The Hero Cape costs 5 MP to purchase, but when you use it, you gain 30MP when leveling instead of only 10. In essence, buying a Hero Cape at 5MP will earn you 20 extra Morphon Points, or a net gain of 15 MP more than the 10MP you would gain without making use of our trademark capes. There isn’t really a downside to getting more MP, is there?

Buy it if offered? Heck ya!

Buy with Caution: Consumables that give temporary Resistance bonuses

Consumables are extremely useful. Who doesn’t go through a day without eating 14 More-Fun Bars or drinking 14 Hateraide beverages? When you need them, they are great to have, but are they worth paying MP for? Beginning heroes might be tempted to buy them because they are offered. I would advice using your best judgement. Will you receive and equal benefit to what you spent to get the consumable? Maybe if you are trying to hold a position on a KOTM event?

I can’t see it, not while there are other ways to stock up on consumables during special events and RAID combats.

Buy it if offered? I wouldn’t, but you do you. Just don’t complain to me about it later.

Good Buy: Power Cards

Occasionally, I have seen Power Cards come up as available to purchase in the Black Market. They are often at a significant discount to the typical cost. For instance, a friend recently had the chance to buy the power to TRAMPLE their opponents for 38MP. I looked it up at the store, and the same Power Card would cost 58MP. That isn’t too bad of a discount.

That would leave enough to tier the Power Card up one level.

Buy it if offered? It depends on the card. If it is one you want, a deal is a deal. Take advantage of it.

Good Buy: Gear

Gear is often difficult to come by outside of the store. While not every offered piece is going to be useful in every situation, it never hurts to have it in your closet should the need arise. Unlike Consumables, Gear isn’t a one-shot use. For example, a piece of gear I was offered was a pair of Thunderclap Pantaloons. Not a fantastic option, but as a newer hero, I was able to get them for 99MP rather than the 230MP in the store. If I happen to face a villain or situation where Elemental damage is a plus, I have them.

Otherwise, I leave them in the closet to add to the static cling of my sweaters.

Buy it if offered? If the discount is worth it, go for it. You never know when it might come in handy. (Plus, if you do not close the transaction window, but instead go to the Armory Tab, you can check prices on many items and make an informed choice. Then go back to the Patrol tab and reselect the triggering event. The option should still be available to you to purchase or decline.)

Stinkeroo Buy: Lucky Rabbit

OK. First, it is definitely not a Lucky Rabbit. It is a foot from a rabbit that was very, very UNLUCKY! Seriously, it lost its foot. I can’t think of anyone that needs money so badly that they carry a severed appendage around on a keychain.

And exchanging 6MP for something that gives you Bux? Take an economics class. This deal stinks more than the rotting foot does.

Buy it if offered? NO, no, no, no, no. There are far better ways of making Bux out there.

I hope some of these reviews help you while bargaining with the Black Market. I’m sure over time there will be many, many more items offered by these shady marketers. Follow Rule of Acquisition #3: Never spend more for an acquisition than you have to.

Until next time,

Madam Marvelous
