[Stormbringers]

Division 6

[Radiated Rogues]

NPC leagues were added to Heroes Rising League Wars for the first time. This was interesting as they fought other leagues and fought other NPC leagues. The characters in the NPC are unique and have a name and appearance similar to their league name and concept. Will we see the NPC's again during the next League event? How did you like it being added into the divisions? Which was your favorite NPC character?

Airline Stability Atlas 02/26/2024

Lykos ID: 18321

The Airline Stability Atlas of 02/26/2024 is complete and we unfortunately just missed our target goal of 13,500,000 people saved. Instead, we hit 13,013,560. I am not sure, but I think that means we let 486,440 people die. Oops.

Let's take a look at the real heroes who put their busy lives on hold to try and rescue as many people as possible. In our lowest division, Division 4, we had only 11 participants giving nearly everyone a nice prize. The 1 - 10th place winners are as follows for Division 4:

(Overall Rank / Div / DivRank / Hero / People saved /Hits / Score Percentile)

60 4 1 Wicked Samurai 11,487 36 0.09%
65 4 2 Justin Case 8,628 95 0.07%
79 4 3 Yan Given-Man 4,692 90 0.04%
93 4 4 Rabid Raccoon 3,479 15 0.03%
114 4 5 Mr Dev 1,072 5 0.01%
120 4 6 Zombie 379 7 0.00%
138 4 7 Crimson Silk 150 1 0.00%
144 4 8 Midnight Hour 141 1 0.00%
145 4 9 Nada Know 141 1 0.00%
162 4 10 Arnold Greyskull 66 1 0.00%

Lets give a warm honorable mention to Zyxw Man for 11th place though.

Division 3 saw a lot more participants with 57 operatives helping to save lives. Our top ten here is as follows:

(Overall Rank / Div / DivRank / Hero / People saved / Hits / Score Percentile)

22 3 1 ‡☠Yojimbo☠ ‡ 93,666 330 0.72%
23 3 2 ‡ ☠"OVERCAST"☠ ‡ 92,797 377 0.71%
43 3 3 Đ₳rK ]v[ystเc 35,895 127 0.28%
54 3 4 DARK VADER 14,408 75 0.11%
61 3 5 Valliss 10,862 38 0.08%
68 3 6 Wulfrik MacGregor 7,274 75 0.06%
69 3 7 Angelus 7,272 75 0.06%
72 3 8 Aisy 6,723 75 0.05%
74 3 9 MechaOgre 6,468 75 0.05%
77 3 10 SOUP 4,989 90 0.04%

While no one broke 100,000 saved, Yojimbo and Overcast did an amazing job.

Division 2 saw slightly less participants than 3 with 53 total. The lives saved were much higher for this heroic set of operatives though. Here are your Top Ten heroes for Division 2:

(Overall Rank / Div / DivRank / Hero / People saved / Hits / Score Percentile)

Three heroes broke the 100K mark so a harty Congrats and Thank you to Puff, Princess Sarai, and Doom!

Division 1 is where all the big hits took place, as you would expect it to be. While there are only 44 participants in this division, they took the lions share of people saved. Looking at the numbers, many people will be going home to their loved ones thanks to these heroes.

Due to the sheer awesomeness found in Division 1, we dont measure in breaking the 100k, but by those who broke the 1 million mark. Our top four participants here are ~666~ B$C, Punlork, Sarg, and Shinobi all breaking that magic barrier of 1 million. Kudos to the 4 of you and a Huge thank you to all the heroes who participated this Atlas. I hope to see YOUR name on that top 10 list for your division in the coming weeks and months.

Heroes Rising is now available as a mobile app!

Greetings Heroes!

The fabled day is upon us! Heroes Rising is officially available as a mobile app! It has been a long time coming, and I'm sure for most if you already playing... not too much is different, other than a few improved interface updates AND a very well loved feature is finally back, only accessible within the mobile app: the ability to watch video ads for rewards! So please, if you play on a mobile device, give the app a download - you SHOULD be able to find it just through searching your respective app store, but the links are also below (and available in-game on the home page if you are playing in mobile and not in-app). Logging in for the first time, you will see yourself as a brand new toon, but you can immediately just click the settings icon in the upper right, and click the button for "Linked Character Accounts" - this will allow you to override the new toon with your current toon, you will just need to enter your login credentials (note, this must use the internal email/password system rather than facebook login, so if you may need to setup your email/password prior if you have not done so yet, which you can do from your profile page. Just comment here or send me a message if you need any help linking your account.)

The Mobile App is still in its infancy, so please report any bugs you come across, or ideas for interface improvements (already looking at the avatar creator, I am thinking that thing needs a big time mobile update so I can see what I am changing without having to scroll up and down) - in March, we will begin marketing and advertising the apps to try and bring in new players. I hope you will enjoy the new app, and if you do, please consider giving it a (hopefully positive) review, as reviews and downloads will greatly help put eyeballs on the game and can be a deciding factor in whether or not a new player will give it a shot! Growing the community will be beneficial to everybody, and in addition to helping grow the community through feedback, there is also a new player referral system setup! Each player has a unique referral code, which you can give to friends and enemies alike, who are starting new toons - you will both get bonus Morphons when their character reaches level 50 and level 100, as well as additional Morphons commensurate with any purchases they end up making! You can find your referral code at the bottom of the Morphons screen, and new players will be able to enter the code from the same place (please note this is for entirely new human beings, not character alts - there will be internal checks made to ensure referred toons are not alts, and no rewards will be given for alts). I would love to hear feedback from entirely new players as well about the new player experience, so if you find and get brand new people playing (or perhaps people who stopped playing long ago), put them in touch with me for feedback on their experience, and both of you will receive some MPs for it!

For Android: Google Play

For iOS: Apple Store

As a final note, unrelated to the new mobile app, I just want to allude to the next big game update... the Multiverse! I am sure many of you out there understand the basics of a multiverse in comics/media - an alternate universe where alternate versions of characters exist. What does this mean for Heroes Rising? Well, it will be something akin to "seasons" seen in other games; I will give a more detailed look in a future post, since the main focus on this is the mobile app, but "Universe Prime", which is where all your characters are now, will remain as is, and a new Multiverse (i.e game server) where everybody starts off as a brand new level 1 toon will start and exist for a few months - this new multiverse will have variant rules and some unique properties, items, gear, etc, and your goal is to basically excel as best as you can in this multiverse - after a few months, the multiverse will collapse, and based on your progress, you will be able to transfer some of the things you earned on this toon to your Universe Prime toon. The purpose of the multiverse is two-fold: one, it is a fun way to add additional play time in Heroes Rising and give players a chance to try new things (run out of energy in Universe Prime? Time to head over to Multiverse A!). Two, I can introduce new features and updates into the game that exist in a temporary world, where players can play test the updates and we can get direct data and feedback about any potential changes to be made to the game, without affecting the main "Universe Prime" we all know and love, incase any new updates or features would be game breaking in some way. I have many plans and ideas for things to introduce into Heroes Rising: things that are fun, things to balance the mechanics, additional ways to inrease in power, new game modes so there is more things to do, all sorts of stuff! Right now though, I am especially hesitant about when and how to add or implement certain changes or additions without breaking anything - I want the game to evolve in a positive direction, and I try my best to ensure anything new or changes made are fair & sensical to the community and game as a whole, but I am only one person, and I don't even play the game (though I do plan on starting my own toon with the mobile app launch, see if you can find me!), so I rely heavily on community feedback. I don't want to lose the plot and I think the Multiverse is a great way for everyone to see and test out any possible changes to be made in Universe Prime before hand, and will allow us all as a community to conversate about said changes/additions - seeing updates in action is much better than just theorizing about it! So I will make a new post in March with more details about the Multiverse, and am planning/hoping to launch the first Multiverse in April - what this means for Universe Prime going forward is that there will not really be any more immediate "game changing" updates made here until it has gone through the Multiverse and had time to cook there first (except for MAYBE rare exceptions, I don't want to be a Sith and box myself in to an absolute). There will still be content updates in Universe Prime of course (new patrols, bosses, gyms, etc - new things within the already existing frameworks), just nothing that really involves "changing the code around" or adding entirely new sections; only things like Quality of Life improvements, bug fixes, technical improvements, UI revisions, that sort of thing.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read through my wall of text! I hope you all enjoy the mobile app and improvements, and I hope we are able to grow our small but awesome community real soon! As always, thanks to everyone for their feedback, and let me know if you have any questions or comments about anything here. Thanks, Heroes!

- Justin

(Player RP- 10879) Requiem for a Legend

(This was composed before the publication of Chapter 14 of The Ragnarok Prophecy was released)

"We salute those who gave their all, in defense of this world and its people. Each and every one of them deserving of a glorious tribute and a place in the annals of history. Among them are various heroes within our collective leagues as well as men and women of BADGE who rose up during moments of doubt and fear, to conquer and overcome.

"To adapt a famous quote often used in literature, and especially apt considering the themes of Norse legends, 'HAIL THE VICTORIOUS DEAD!'"

Some in the audience immediately raised a glass, and repeated the chant, "Hail the Victorious Dead!"

"Many have offered words of tribute and acknowledgement of the being some call Midgard, some call Jormungandr, others more familiarly, The Serpent. Amongst my friends, I've called him Snakey, but would never dare say it to his face."

Some chuckles from the assembled people present, allowed Tri-blade a brief moment to pause and reflect. He continued.

"Some people have called him a villain, others an anti-hero. His tale is long, tightly-weaved, and spans years countless to most of us. For those of us who have met his acquaintance in this and other realms, you'll understand his character cannot be reduced to such simple terms.

"Some saw a creature brash or belligerent. Others saw the humanity behind the piercing scales, booming voice, and immense mass particularly when transformed. Like many humans though, he had a fondness for the outdoors, the thrill of a hunt, the laughter among friends.

"My personal interactions with him weren't many and pale heavily in comparison to his leaguemates in this realm and in S.H.C., but they were always insightful and revealing. In my very last conversation with him, he took the time to personally thank myself among others for driving him to increase his strength in a distinct aspect of battling. At the time, I brushed if off as faint praise, but over time I have come to recognize the genuine respect that he carries, even for rivals... no matter the disparity in strength or influence.

"Some myths suggest that Midgardsomr was destined to rend the world asunder, be a world-breaker. I saw it much differently, and the events of the past months showed exactly that.

"He. Loved. This. Realm.

"Few here have such an intense, genuine, love for this realm. To him, his drive was balance. Fairness for all, each person being able to achieve with whatever gifts they possessed. We all may argue about methods or the best way to achieve this, but his passion was unmatched.

"Hail the Serpent. Hail his quest for balance. May his efforts be ever-felt in the hearts of us all."

New Feature - Hero mode Raids-

By Rankin Phyle (PID# 36312)
It is my pleasure to report that a new feature has arrived for BADGE Raids... HERO mode
While the new HERO mode raids are significantly tougher, and limited to 2o member raid crews, the rewards are commensurately improved as well.
In order to initiate a HERO mode raid, one must have previously participated in that raid type, AND have done significant damage in a single raid (5% of total damage)...
To begin to summon a HERO mode raid, you begin a normal summon of that raid. Provided that you have met the minimum damage requirement above, you will be given a checkbox for HERO mode initiation. Check that and your summon will continue as with normal raid procedure.

The BADGE representative we spoke with said, and I quote "We at BADGE hope all heroes enjoy this new feature."

The Definitive Guide To Building A Monster Toon On A Budget; The Final Volume

Presented by:
The Hanzo Ninja Clan School Of Anything Goes Martial Arts

25104

While this series and all my articles have always been intended to help all players, the primary focus has always been to help the free and budget player find ways to grind out a toon that could be competitive with the pay to win players. Well, you can take every article I have ever written and throw it out. They no longer have any value. Every time I write an article that shows play to win players how to move their toon forward, the development team here nerfs it and takes it away from you. So there's really no point in writing them. Trying to give you any kind of advantage merely causes me to lose it. So I won't be writing any more. If you have questions or need advice from me, most of you are more than welcome to ask directly.

As far as SC toons go, the increase in tokens for Krampus raids and the removal of sc from all but hero raids has firmly taken the advantage building an sc toon had, out of the hands of free and budget players and put only in the hands of the big money players and those who got in early enough that their sc build is either already finished or damn near. I'm sorry if you ruined your toon to pursue building an sc toon, just to now discover it will take years or lots of money to complete now. I know many who did. I wish I could change that for you, but the league led by a pay to win player and filled with toons that already finished their sc builds, successfully campaigned to take the affordable sc build out of your hands, and keep you from catching them. I'm just as disgusted as those of you that ruined your toons. GL with the rebuild, and for those players that aren't pay to win or didn't have an sc build near completion before this drastic change, I hope you can enjoy the parts of the game that aren't pvp and pay to win.

Behind the Keyboard: The Lady Echidna Arc

Hello heroes, this is Dan Peyton, your friendly author (and sometimes artist) for Heroes Rising. I have enjoyed writing for this game since 2019. It has been a challenge and pushed me beyond limits I once believed existed. I hope you enjoy the storylines.

I wanted to write this to talk about the strange way the Lady Echidna storyline played out. Each year, I have tried to concoct a unique story arc that linked to the stories of the past while introducing new characters, places, and events. Personally, my goal is to avoid rehashing the same villains and same stories, which are common with a lot of superhero writing. Over a year ago, Nick Shapiro sold the game to our current developer, Justin Towe. When Nick was in charge, he and I would sit and really hash out what the story was doing and where it would go. He gave me some ideas and asked me to do certain things. (For example, it was his request that EB stay a permanent player in the story, and I really liked the idea as well.) With Justin, I had a little more freedom, and that left me a little blank at first. Where did I want the story to go? Justin's ideas for the game were abundant, and he worked on reworking it to make it better, with the eventual goal of publishing it as an app game. All that had nothing to do with storyline creation. So, I had my work cut out for me. I had to be the sole creator of the story.

Or, so I thought. . .

Where did Lady Echidna come from? This all started with a music video. Really. I was watching the music video for Get this Part Started with Shirley Bassey. Somehow, the ambiance of the video itself seeded this idea of a villain and her evil henchmen partying while the world burned. That idea grew into a unique character of Lady Echidna. For me, it was an opportunity to have a female villain as the lead. However, I needed to make this villain truly a challenge. Something that the heroes would struggle with. I dipped into an old trick started in the books for Sherlock Holmes. I made the villain an equal to the most powerful hero. This gave me the opportunity to explore Nova’s history and character. Nova gave himself over to her and now the heroes faced a serious problem. Their most powerful leader was working with the most powerful villain.

Things went along smoothly. I couldn’t have her being super powerful right from the start. I had to build her power so that the story could flow. She needed to gather the power she once had. This tied into the beginning of something for the game, summonable raids. I wrote the shadow monster of Krampus to set into motion the first major summon, and then the next was Fenrir. This was the first major tie-in with the gameplay.

After that, Justin came to me and ask about introducing another new feature: The Battle Arena. Specifically, he wanted it to be fantasy-related so that it would have a different aesthetic than the other aspects of the game. The fantasy author in me was doing a happy dance. I got to bring in a fantasy world. I even dipped a little into one of my own fantasy realms from a recent book release. This brought in Torrik Treeleaf and the Battle Realm. It also gave me an additional part of Lady Echidna’s goal. She wants to enter the realm of magic to harvest power through dark means. (Sadly, the Battle Realm is still under construction, but it is on its way.) As far as the story goes, it was enough to move forward.

Note: Torrik was originally written to be a foil for EB. Both are charming, women chasing fantasy creatures. But, with the way the story went, I changed that.

I had this all written out, knew where the story would lead and how it would work. There was a big crossover where the fantasy world and ours would meet. Dragons and heroes would fight ogres, trolls, and Lady Echidna’s minions of darkness. It was planned perfectly. . . until something terrible happened.

One of our heroes in the real world crossed over. We lost Mike Gibbon just as he was working with Justin in creating a special raid for his well-known character of Midgardsormr. Before his passing, Justin had asked me to write it into the story so the annual Midgard Raid would have narrative to give it reason to exist. But halfway through the creation process, Mike left us. Behind the scenes, we all sat back and wondered how we could honor his memory. I thought about just moving on with my original story, but I couldn’t do that. Besides, I had already introduced Midgard as a player in Lady Echidna’s schemes during the Fenrir story.

So, I tossed everything out the window for my conclusion to this and tried to steer the story in a completely new direction. I made Midgard a crucial part of Lady Echidna’s machinations, even letting her dominate and control him. But, I had a plan. The story would play out in a darker tone. She slaughters an entire league, she spreads darkness and poisons the minds of all the humans, the sun goes out, the stars go out, hope is almost extinguished. I even introduced a last-ditch-effort maneuver by BADGE, crashing the station into Earth to destroy her. But Midgard returns in a glorious Deus ex machina and proves his strength is more than a match for her. Even Nova, her equal, cannot best her, but Midgard can.

This wasn’t just to give him a glorious send-off. It was a nod to the many times Mike’s character swept in and finished the World Raids for us.

My ultimate goal in this story was to let Midgard have his place in the heavens. He would hold back this ultimate evil by sacrificing himself for eternity. However, as planned before his passing, we would still get our annual World Raid with Midgard.

I never worried that the players would be upset that I wrote them losing a battle that they technically won. The point wasn’t to give them the glory; the point was to give our late friend his last, heroic triumph.

Writing this story was the hardest I have done for the game. It took me on twists and turns I did not expect. Everything changed over and over, but I tried to keep it in line. I really hope the players enjoyed it. I look forward to writing more. And don't worry, I will make sure to tone down the fantasy part so that we can focus on the more science-fiction element that make superhero stories unique.

Thank you

Daniel Peyton (aka Gargoyle “Gar”)

p.s. The fact that this tied in with the mythology of Ragnarok was completely coincidence. I was researching more about Midgardsormr and Fenrir when I started reading more and more about the legend of Ragnarok, and it all seemed to fit into place nicely.

(Player RP- PID#10890) A Ballad of Balances - TRAILENE

"No way," Trailene smirked as she reclined on her leather chair.

Her 'merry little crew', as she called Skins and Honch, had done an admirable job of setting up their makeshift hideout in a nondescript warehouse overlooking the waterfront of New Amsterdam and one of her favourite features was the lounge area complete with several (stolen) high-tech TVs. Trailene had happened to be channel-surfing when the screen displayed an exhausted-looking woman thrusting her arms outwards, sending a wave of energy, purple-pink in tone, in the form of a shield. A large behemoth struck the shield and rebounded forwards, instead of crashing through the building. The caption accompanying the report simply said, 'Untold damage to lives and property averted by the hero Macaia's Daughter'.

She beckoned Skins over. Skins, who had taken to the habit of bringing over unknown women from time-to-time, patted his newest friend on the head and sauntered over to join his boss. "So that's the gal you wanna crush? She's cute."

"If you like them goody two shoes like that, maybe," Trailene scoffed. "But check it out, Skins. Getting in the mix against the monsters, even."

She took a large swig of her drink. "That's actually very impressive for that flyweight. Gonna have to up my game for the next time I see her, to finish her off."

In a rare instance, Skins' face took a serious tone. His eyebrows furrowed as he said, "Keep you head in the game, boss. Don't get distracted."

Trailene turned on him. "YOU focus on not getting distracted by the twerking blondie waif you rotate in and out of here every week, Skins. I'm fully focused on our plans, so make sure you are as well."

Backing away, Skins said, "Absolutely, boss." He walked back to his previous spot, took the hand of his new friend, and walked to another room.

Trailene sighed inwardly. That skinny fool had a point. They were in a solid position - it would be fun to crush her once and for all, but we're building up something nice here with this underground unit. Even Honch and Skins have recruited underlings of their own for various tasks. We have enough loot and deals in place to have us living comfortably for a decent amount of time and at the expense of the do-gooders. She briefly closed her eyes, trying to relax.

---

"Aw man, I wish I had powers too," whined Trailene.

Ereka, a pretty woman in her late teens, conjured a bolt of energy from her hand, and with a wave, pushed it up in the air. She snapped her fingers and the energy bolt disappeared instantly. "Well the next best thing, your best friend has some, right?"

Trailene punched Ereka in the shoulder. "Very small consolation. Are you going to fight the Legion?"

"I suppose I'd have to, Tra. If whatever this is, is a gift, then protecting my loved ones is the next step."

They walked arm in arm along the crowded sidewalk, not altering their path for anyone. Some people stared, their awe at seeing the auburn-haired youth casually firing energy into the air overwhelming. Others pulled out cellphones and took photos. Ereka and Trailene were oblivious to the added attention.

Their period of enjoyment was interrupted by a loud rumbling noise. The ground shook heavily, as Ereka and Trailene stumbled to keep their footing. A large crack appeared in the road just as a pair of large alien behemoths strode along the street. People screamed and dashed in all directions.

One of the monsters grabbed a truck and effortlessly hurled it along the road. It rolled and tumbled before smashing into a storefront. With a heavy laugh, the other beast picked up a van - its driver frantically honking the horn - before throwing it in the same direction.

"Run!" shouts Trailene, reaching out for her friend, only for her hand to clench at air. She whirled in a panic and nearly burst into tears. Ereka had tried to dash across the street after the truck was hurled, only to be caught in the path of the van. Ereka was pinned underneath the overturned van and screaming in utter pain. The driver of the van moaned as he fell into unconsciousness.

"Help!" cried out Trailene as she ran over. She pushed the van, to no avail. It didn't budge an inch, and Trailene dropped to her knees. Ereka's screams continued.

---

Her reminiscing was interrupted by a ring on the wallphone. Trailene bolted out of her seat - when they were setting up their hideout, the first thing she requested was a dedicated line, with no dial-out ability. It was for incoming calls, from one specific entity. She was not going to let it ring twice.

"Here," Trailene said emotionlessly.

A voice on the other end began to speak. Trailene nodded, as if taking instruction on a next course of action.

"Thank you," Trailene finally responded. "An unrelated question, if I may?"

Silence from the other end, then two words. "Go ahead."

"N? Is there any way for me to negate mentally-generated attacks directed at me?"

Heroes Rising Fiction: The Prophecy of Ragnarok Part 14 Finale

“NOVA!” EB raced across the tops of the computers all the way down to Nova, slamming into him so hard that Nova stumbled back five feet and had to catch himself before he fell over. EB was now attached to Nova’s chest, hugging him furiously. “I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD, BUT THEN YOU CAME BACK AND THEN YOU FOUGHT AND YOU WERE SOOO AMAZING, BUT KINDA SCARY, IT WAS ALL SCARY, AND SHE WAS A HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE PERSON, AND THERE WERE THESE SHADOW MONSTERS, HUGE ONES, AND THEN THE WORLD WAS ALL DARK AND EVERYTHING WAS ALMOST DEAD AND I COULDN’T BREATHE, I WAS CRYING SOOOOOOOO HARD BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS ALL OVER AND YOU WERE DEAD, BUT YOU CAME BACK AND HAD WINGS AND A SWORD AND WERE ALL LIT UP LIKE THE SUN ITSELF, AND THEN MIDGARD SHOWED UP, BUT YOU ALREADY KNEW THAT. HEY HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? WHY ARE YOU BACK? I SAW YOU WITH A KNIFE IN YOUR CHEST. I’M SO GLAD YOU’RE ALIVE!”

“EB!” Nova attempted to pry the bunny off of him, but failed.

EB swooned, “OH, I LOVE THAT IRATE YELL. I HAVEN’T HEARD THAT IN SO LONG. JUSTIN YELLED AT ME, BUT NOT LIKE YOU. MY BESTEST, BEST BUDDY!”

“Get off me!” Nova finally removed EB from his chest.

EB hopped down and was bouncing up and down with excitement. “What happened?”

Justin led the others down to the front of the room. Everyone, save perhaps Torrik, was misty eyed at the sight of him.

“Sir,” Justin softly said, betraying his failed attempt at holding down his own emotions. “Are you really back?”

Nova smiled and nodded. “Yes. And, to answer the question the world wants to know, Lady Echidna is forever gone. We cannot kill Lady Echidna, but we have contained her in a way that will hold her at bay until time itself stops.”

Santa said, “You have told me much about yourself. You confided many secret details to me, yet I was not prepared for what we witnessed. How did you survive? What… what are you?”

Nova looked around the people in this room, all waiting for this answer with bated breath. “I am Nova, defender of this world. That is all you need to know about me.”

Torrik asked, “You seemed to have a pretty good idea of what was going to happen. How come you let her rise to power and do what she did if you knew how to defeat her?”

“I didn’t know exactly how it would all play out. But I knew I needed to let her advance her plans far enough that she tapped into all her monsters she created. They were the true source of her power. Once she harnessed them, she had nothing left here to give her strength. Defeating her would mean she could never regain that power again. However, by allowing her to harness her power meant the fight would be at her strongest. I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I needed Midgard. He was far stronger than I.”

“What about Midgard? Where is he?” Justin asked.

Nova looked back at a monitor that displayed the space outside. “He is where he needs to be.”

Justin said, “Now that the world is truly safe from her, we can put our efforts into rebuilding.”

Nova nodded, “Yes. However, I am afraid that my actions have truly tarnished my image. I ask that you stand in for me for a while longer. I don’t know if I will ever be welcome again in this world.”

“I will be…”

“ABSOLUTELY NOT! I WON’T LET THE WORLD HATE ON YOU. NO SIREE!” EB hopped around Nova.

“Don’t do anything stupid.”

“Would I ever do anything stupid?” EB grinned as Nova let out an annoyed sigh.

“I can’t stop whatever you’re planning?”

“Nope.”

***

Four weeks passed as the world recovered from what Lady Echidna had done. On a select date, set by Nova, the celebrations began. Heroes and dignitaries filled the field of the Orbital Arena. Where the League Wars would normally occur, people walked around in exquisite outfits and enjoyed an elaborate party.

Nova walked with Chase, who wore an incredible red sequined dress. An ambassador and his wife both stopped and bowed to Nova and then walked on.

“I must admit, EB did a good job.” Chase took a flute of champagne from a passing tray.

Nova greeted a Prime Minister and then continued walking with her. “He spent two hundred million dollars on a huge publicity campaign to promote me. News stories about my victories in the past, constant interviews with heroes and BADGE agents to talk about how good I am, and those commercials reminding people I saved the world from the horrible darkness that spread. I’m surprised he hasn’t commissioned a full-length movie...” Nova saw a funny look on Chase’s face. “Don’t tell me... “

“Well, he has good intentions. And I think Chris Hemsworth would do a fine job of playing you.”

“He didn’t?”

She cleared her throat and looked over at the beefy Australian actor signing autographs. “I think he wants to talk to you about how to portray you.”

“This is insane.”

She fixed his bowtie on his tuxedo and said, “Go, talk to him. BADGE needs a good image and Hollywood blockbusters can help.”

“You go talk to him. Find out about this movie and let me know the details.”

“Fine.” She left Nova for the hunky Australian star.

Arx walked up behind Nova and said, “Why didn’t EB ask me? I’m twice as handsome as that bozo, and I have a perfect body. I don’t need a high-dollar trainer and fake tan.” The jealousy dripped from every word.

Nova laughed, “I think it’s still a good idea for you to stay out of the limelight. The last time you were in Hollywood, you nearly destroy the city.”

“Fair point,” Arx said.

“Did you need something?” Nova asked.

“Oh, yeah, we have a minor problem. EB caught someone who isn't supposed to be here, but he claims he was invited.”

“A gatecrasher? I think the security drones can handle that.” Nova waved at the Canadian Prime Minister.

“Well, they claim you invited them.”

Nova turned around and found EB standing next to Rutkowski in the far corner of the room. The gangster tethered by a long, magical cord made of licorice. “Actually, I invited him.” Nova left the crowd to get to the guest.

Rutkowski glared at Nova, “Is dis how yous guys treat an honored guest?”

EB tightened his magic cord, “Honored my furry butt. You’re here to scope out some sinister heist or something. Lots of expensive jewelry walking around this room.”

Nova said, “EB, let him go. I invited him.”

“Really? Oh, uh, okay.” He let go of the cord and it flopped to the ground.

Rutkowski fixed his 1930s striped suit. “See, told you I was invited. But, don’t get me wrong, I ain’t accepting no hero title or nothing.”

Arx asked, “What is he talking about?”

Nova said, “I heard that Rutkowski and Peyton worked together to help save Neo Utopia during the worst of the crisis. It impressed me that Rutkowski was the one who thought of it and never asked for anything in return. So, I thought it was time that he received some respect.

“I shoulda got some respect years ago.”

Nova said, “You might find being an honest man pays better than being a criminal. And, since the world knows how honorable you acted, you have a pretty good start.”

Rutkowski scoffed, “Great, now I gotta knock over a bank on da way home so I can fix my street cred.”

Nova laughed at that and walked away.

Rutkowski pulled out his cigarette case.

“No smoking!” EB jumped up and slapped the case out of his hand.

Rutkowski rolled his eyes. “Aw, come on.”

“Here, try these.” EB hopped up and handed him some carrots.

Rutkowski chomped on one and looked surprised. “They aint half bad.”

***

Nova walked into the middle of the extensive field as he greeted people along the way. He stopped at a hovering microphone and the lights dimmed so he was under a spotlight. Everyone watched him with great curiosity. The screens came alive around the stadium as they would during the League Wars. Across the planet, people in grand parties stopped to witness this.

“Thank you for coming to this celebration. Tonight, we aren’t here just to recognize the end of a terrible time during the Lady Echidna crisis. I called you together to pay respect to a hero that has given his all for the safety of this world. However, this is no memorial. He will be with us tonight, shortly, and will explain. I believe he is coming now.” Nova stepped aside.

A bright light shone down from outside the clear dome over the arena. A figure appeared in the light and stepped out. Midgard, in his human form, joined Nova.

“I told you I didn’t want a big celebration.” Midgard said to Nova.

Nova responded, “The world has the right to celebrate you, especially with what you are here to say.” He stepped back, giving Midgard the floor.

Midgard approached the mic and spent a moment looking uncomfortable. Finally, he said, “Hello. You know me as Midgardsormr, or possible as Jormungandr. For several thousand years, I have been with you, most of that time in secret. I forgot who I was for a long time and slowly gained a reputation. While I enjoyed my power, Nova drove me to understand honor... even when I rebuked his lessons. He is a good man, better than anyone truly knows. Centuries ago, we made a plan. We knew that our greatest foe would return and precise steps had to be taken to ensure the safety of this world. Regrettably, those steps would cause damage and cost some lives. However, we would achieve the goal. Lady Echidna is locked away as she was before. We have locked away Lady Echidna as before, but now all her power is sealed away with her, preventing her from feeding off this world. Even so, she is clever and dangerous. To make sure she never returns, I vow to stand guard in the void and restrain her for all time.”

There were many gasps and murmuring as he said this. He continued, “This world is a safer place because of BADGE and I know Nova will see to that. So… this is goodbye. It has been an interesting ride. Don’t mess it up.” The crowds applauded him as he stepped away from the mic.

The mic flew away as the ambient music returned.

Arx, Chase, EB, Gar, Justin, and Torrik joined Nova and Midgard.

EB’s lip quivered, “So... you’re leaving us for good?”

Midgard let out a hefty laugh. “Don’t tell me the puny little bunny now cares about me.”

“You aren’t so bad. You saved everyone. I’m gonna miss you.” He walked over and hugged Midgard’s leg.

“Gah, this is what I didn’t want, a mushy farewell. I’m Midgardsormr, not some Dorothy saying goodbye to the scarecrow!” He shoved the bunny off.

Chase laughed, “There’s that Midgard attitude we’ve come to love. Well, I’m gonna miss you too.”

“Bah! I’ll come back once a year to kick all your collective butts. Gotta remind this world who the real badass is.”

Justin asked, “What do you mean?“

Nova answered, “I agreed to a battle once a year. Midgard will return and fight the heroes in an epic showdown. No one kills anyone and nothing gets damaged. But the heroes will test themselves against one of the most powerful beings to walk this earth.”

“Ha! I like that. Never let anyone forget I am the strongest!” Midgard looked up. “I’ve been gone too long already. I need to get out of here.”

Nova walked up and took Midgard by the wrist in a powerful show of friendship. There was a glisten of a tear in his one good eye. “We’re going to miss you. You were a true hero, even when you pretended not to be. You touched all our lives and made this a better place. We owe you so much.”

Midgard replied, “Thanks. Coming from you, that really means something.” He pulled Nova in and came close to his ear, whispering something. He backed away and let go of Nova’s hand. Midgard grew brighter for a moment and then faded away.

Chase asked, “What did he say?”

Nova, who had gained a worried expression, said, “Don’t worry about it.”

Justin said, “I’m going to miss him.”

Nova quietly watched the stars above them. In a soft voice, he said, “He isn’t gone, not really. As long as we remember him, he will always be with us.”

Heroes Rising Fiction: The Prophecy of Ragnarok Part 13

Justin watched the sight before him. The world came closer at alarming speed. He had to hold on to the console nearest him so he didn’t fall over as the station rattled and rumbled. The underside was already blazing hot with their energy shields keeping the atmospheric entry from destroying them too soon. On most of the monitors, a warning flashed that the power core of the station was unstable. The impact would detonate the most powerful energy system ever created.

Tears rolled down his face as he knew what was coming. He would die today, as would thousands of others, including everyone in New Meta City. All in the hope that this was enough to destroy this immortal being of darkness.

“I’m sorry, Nova. I wasn’t good enough.”

***

Santa held his throat, struggling to take oxygen in.

A soft sobbing sounded next to him and he reached over and felt EB’s small, furry body on the ground. “Don’t cry, my old friend.”

EB said, “I really thought we could beat her. I thought we could get back my friend. It can’t end like this. Evil can’t win.”

Santa looked up at the small pinpoint of light that was the station careening toward them. “It won’t be long now. There is one last chance. But it will not be ours to see. Now, my old friend, we pass this existence and tread the next adventure, wherever that takes us.”

“It’s so dark,” EB wept.

A bright flash of light cracked the heavens, and the ensuing thunder shook the world. Santa gasped in a stronger breath, the darkness no longer holding him down.

“What… was that?” EB asked.

A brilliant ball of light sped over them, splitting the darkness in twain and sundering it into a mere fog that dissipated quickly.

Santa got up to his knees and watched. “It can’t be!”

EB was about to ask when he saw it. A winged angel flew directly at Lady Echidna, a bright sword in his hand as he met her with an incredible slash. Her scream rattled their bones, and the darkness faded even more.

A nearby hero asked, “Who is that?”

Santa held a quivering smile with tears in his eyes. “It’s Nova!”

Nova, the arch angel, flew around in the sky and a massive bolt of lightning spewed from his hands and met Echidna. She few back and rolled across the ground, recovering quickly with a rise into the air, her shadow still surrounding her. From their view, they saw her standing opposite the angel, who was surrounded by light, in stark contrast to her intense darkness.

She flew directly at Nova and attacked him, her darkness sending him sprawling. He recovered just as quick as she did and came back for a counterattack. Again and again they sparred, each attacking the other with their light and dark essence.

Darth Raider rushed up, “COME ON, LET’S HELP!”

Santa swiftly held out his sword to stop them. “No. We are no true match. We retreat and regroup. I don’t think he can defeat her, but he can hold her at bay long enough for Justin to finish this, I hope. MOVE!”

Everyone turned to run, but paused at what they saw approaching. The color drained from many faces at this sight. EB whispered, “Oh, my god.”

Moments before:

“How?” Echidna screeched as she saw her formerly dead opponent standing before her.

Nova, his red eye glowing brightly, answered, “I was one step ahead of you since before you returned. I knew this day would come, and so I prepared. You split your soul by selling your heart to hate and evil. I split mine by dividing the most pure of mine and placing it in this ruby. Once reunited, I am as I was before, an arcblade.”

She scoffed, “Still a fallen one. You cannot overcome that.”

“No. But I can now face you as an equal.”

Nova flew at Echidna and struck her with his sword of light. He sliced right through her shadow. It caused her immense pain, but she simply reformed. She twisted around and threw an arm at him, which sent a bolt of shadow at his mid-section. Her attack thrust him backward across the ice, causing him to scream in agony.

“End this, Nova! You know you can’t defeat me. I killed you once. I can do it again!”

Nova stood and held up his sword, causing it to beam extra bright. She lurched back. He answered her, “I vowed to defend this world from all evils. I will not back down, I will not stop. This battle is over.”

She held out her hands and brought them back together. All the dark shadows cast by anything around Nova came crashing in at him. He quickly covered himself with his glowing wings and the shadows sloughed off. He responded by thrusting his sword forward and casting a glorious light from it in a single beam. She held up her arm and a swath of darkness met the light and destroyed it.

“Face it, Nova, we’re equals. This battle will continue for eternity.”

Nova smiled and lowered his sword and took a step back. “You’re correct. We are equals. I am complete now, and a match for you. Your soul is dark. I am light. This will continue forever. I can’t defeat you.”

“Then you surrender?” She wasn’t backing down.

He shook his head, “No. I can’t defeat you... alone.”

“What?” her question was answered by the shaking of the ground and the crashing of ice as the continent was crushed.

She looked to see Midgardsormr stomping toward them in his fullest form. He walked through the ocean as one might stride through a pool, the ice parting for him as he moved. In his right hand held the same sword Nova once bore, only it was many times greater.

Lady Echidna called out her shadow to attack before Midgard got to her. However, Nova responded by summoning his light and restraining her. Midgard reached back with his great sword and came crashing down on her with the blade, slicing through rock and ice, deep into the heart of Antarctica.

From inside the fissure created by his attack, the shadow burst out and struck Midgard in the face. The mighty serpent reeled back a few steps, going half a mile away for a moment. The explosion of shadow threw Nova away as well, skidding him across the snowy ground.

Lady Echidna rose in the air, the shadow spinning around her in a torrent. "You cannot destroy me!" She exclaimed. “I am the heart of darkness, the evil of all things. I will never go away!”

A bolt of white lightning passed through her, and she crashed into the ground. Nova stood once more, his hands held up as the light from his body burned so hot that he cast deep shadows across the dome of New Meta City.

“We know what you are, and we know how to defeat you forever, my lady. Midgard, it is time!”

She struggled against his light. Her shadow couldn’t form in the brilliance that surrounded her. “What... what are you doing?” There was a pitiful plea in that voice. The first time she truly sounded fearful in known history.

Midgard stomped toward her, reaching out with his massive claw. He grasped her, taking her shadow into his hand as if he were gripping a branch of a mighty tree. She was in his grip.

He bellowed, “It is over!”

Nova, still beaming with light, flew up on his wings as Midgard rose into the sky, the light of Nova surrounding him and still restraining her.

“Nova! What are you doing? I can’t be destroyed! Midgardsormr, let me go!”

***

Santa watched this incredible sight as he and the other heroes fled the chaotic battle of the three deities.

“What just happened?” EB asked, sitting next to Santa in his sleigh.

Santa shook his head. “I don’t know. I think we won. Oh, no!” He snapped the reins and circled around the fleeing heroes. “Anyone who can help, get to the station. Stop it falling!” Heroes turned quickly and rushed into the sky to carry the station back to its place in orbit.

EB slapped the comm on Santa’s wrist, “Justin, stop the Omega thing. Now!”

“What?” Justin asked.

Santa spoke, “It is over. She is defeated. End Omega before you blow yourself up. I’ve sent heroes to help put the station back in orbit.”

“Understood.”

***

Two days later:

Justin summoned a meeting in the station's boardroom, calling all the BADGE leaders, as well as Santa and Torrik. They spoke about the repercussions of the battle and how BADGE would respond.

“Chase, I’m putting you and EB in charge of speaking with the national leaders that contact us. Let them know we will do all we can to help to address the damages from this conflict. But remind them it is over.”

“Is it?” Chase asked.

Santa said, “It has been two days and there is no sign of Lady Echidna or her people.”

Gar asked, “I still don’t know what happened? I saw Nova... alive. He had wings. And Midgard returned. But they are gone. And…”

Justin stopped him. “There are a lot of questions, and I don’t know if we’ll ever get answers. I am inclined to believe it is over for good. But, without solid evidence, I just don’t know. I am still not convinced that was Nova in the end. As far as the report goes, Santa and Torrik found Nova dead with a blade buried in his chest.”

“I was him! I know it!” EB yelled.

Justin said, “I wish it was him. I wish he was here. We would have answers.”

Torrik said, “Well, I can tell you that none of my spells detect shadow magic on this world. Which is amazing considering how far spread her shadow went. So, it is over.”

Justin looked at the time. “I have a long meeting with the United Nations in ten minutes and we are not accomplishing anything. You have your orders. Let’s get to them.”

The meeting adjourned, and everyone left for the Operations center. However, the moment they stepped out of the meeting, something stopped all of them dead in their tracks.

Nova, in his normal outfit with an eye-patch over his face, turned and looked at them. He let out his signature little smile and said, “About time. I’ve been waiting for an hour.”
