Art Post: Food Coma

So, you finally got the invite. The richest superhero in all the known world has invited a select few to his house for a big Thanksgiving celebration. You aren't even fazed by the fact that you show up in costume instead of the customary sweater like everyone else. This is the party of the season and you've missed it three years in a row. So, what do you do? You stuff yourself on turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and corn. Now you're in that ever dreaded turkey coma while football blares on the 100 inch super-screen television. I guess it's okay to snore, on tailored leather sofa. Just pray that no supervillian decides to interrupt the big game again this year.

Food Coma / Turkey Coma was one of three pieces I did for Thanksgiving this year. Actually, Nick asked me to do the art for Black Friday specials. I had to put a lot of thought into what I wanted the art to be. This is a superhero game, how do I work Thanksgiving and Black Friday into a superhero game? The first two cards were easier to come up with, the defense card wasn't easy. Then I thought of Thanksgiving and had the idea of someone stuffing themselves with food and then snoozing it off. Even heroes are susceptible to the ever-present turkey coma of the season. And, it would be a funny defense card. After I completed this, Nick found it hilarious and wanted to prioritize it. This gave us two cards for the holiday, one for the sale and one special one for the day itself. Gotta love free stuff!

About the art. As I said, the notion of a sleeping, stuffed superhero was the plan. But, did I want him to still be buff and muscly or not? Obviously I went away from the buff and muscly. This art was all about the humor. A plump guy snoozing on a couch gets the point across, but then put him in superhero tights, and it gets funnier. He has to look like he was trying to watch the game, but couldn't keep his eyes open, so slumped over was perfect. The couch is also overstuffed, which helps feed into the theme of the image and makes it look extra comfy. The most dangerous place after a big meal is a plush, comfy place to sit. The background was a conscious choice, I wanted the traditional energetic superhero background to add to the humor of the piece. Finally, colors were actually a big decision in this. I made him colorful, like a superhero with primary shades of blue and yellow, both energetic. The background is also a bright energetic color. All of this is off-set by the soft brown of the sofa, which is bringing the energy down.

I hope you enjoyed the art and the cards that came from it. Now...I think I'll go take a nap.
