News Update: The Quest in the Midwest

By Chaz Hamilton

Hello there. This is Chaz Hamilton reporting from Fort Knox area of Kentucky. I’ve arrived here with hundreds of others as a search like no other has begun.

Yesterday, Director Nova sent out a message to all heroes to come to the Kentucky/Indiana border and search for shards of a ruby crystal that were distributed in an explosion in a potential 300-mile radius. This means that fragments could have been distributed over several states, including parts of Tennessee, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and several others. It might be easier to say this will be the Quest in the Midwest.

BADGE has requested that civilians without superpowers remain at home and do not engage in the pieces. They haven’t given a definitive reason why at this time, but anonymous sources have commented on the artifacts being either radioactive or “energized”. There have also been hushed exchanges between BADGE agents and heroes overheard which mention a Mythic level threat.

Perhaps at some point, Director Nova wound care to speak with myself or another media source to explain the reasons for such an expansive effort. I’m sure that he understands that the recently spotted downpour of red from the sky has some people very frightened.

Let me introduce Karen Brown. She is a grandmother caught traveling between Louisville and her home in Hog Wallow as she visited her son, Stretch.

Chaz: Miss Brown, can you tell me what you spotted?

Karen Brown: Let me tell you, I was minding my business as I stopped at the Dairy Queen here to get a coke and use the bathroom when the sky exploded in flashes of red light. We’ve got red lightning down here from time to time, but today, there isn’t a storm cloud in sight. This were something different. I hollered at everyone in the parking lot to get inside.

Chaz: That’s very quick thinking on your part.

Karen Brown: You have to think quick when you live where a tornada can sneak up on you in the middle of the night. One night a few years back, there was one that kicked up after I put my curlers in and had tucked myself into bed. You see, I’m a widowed woman and I live by myself. I’m not going to let some slick-talking man worm his way into my home until I get that ring, you hear. My momma raised me better than that.

Chaz: I’m sure she did. Now, back to the red flashes in the sky.

Karen Brown: Now don’t interrupt me here, boy. See, I’ve had men that were interested in me since Stretch Sr. passed away, but none of them were worth their salt. I made the mistake of being with a man that weren’t worth a hoot before. Never again. Bless their hearts for trying, but they’ve got to have some nerve thinking I’m going to let them see my body before I see them do an honest day’s work first.

Chaz: And you are lovely. I’m sure you get many men asking you out. But the red lights in the—

Karen Brown: Now, you’ve got a good job, I see. Are you single? A handsome young man like you should have a nice girl at home. If you don’t, I have a second cousin whose youngest daughter is on the hunt. She had a nice young man a few years ago, but they didn’t work out. She’s a pretty thing.

Chaz: I’m sure she is, but what about those red lights?

Karen Brown: Oh, yeah. Well, we all ran inside the here Dairy Queen and watched as tiny red, glowing stones fell. Believe you me, we was all watching for some gold to fall from the sky. With Fort Knox just down yonder and a big explosion, you best believe we were all hoping for a golden shower.

Chaz: Ummm…

Karen Brown: Now, these red stones bounced around when they hit the ground like those Mexican Jumping Beans. Have you ever seen one of those? Wee-hoo, we surprised old Junior Miles with some of those for his birthday a few years back. Made him a supper and a big old bowl of those beans. I can tell you, when he opened the plastic lid off the tub, he fell back in his chair and landed on the cat.

Chaz: Thank you, Karen Brown. We appreciate hearing things from your point of view, but I have to go. Yes, umm, one of the heroes, Catalyst is signaling for me to talk. This is Chaz Hamilton signing off. I’ll bring you back with more details as I can uncover them. People of the world, I’ll talk to you soon.

Karen Brown: Is he from New Amsterdam, too? Is he single? I’ve got this other cousin with a daughter who’d love to go to a big city…
